Hearing the Confession~

Confession whether private or communal is foundational to the Christian Faith. We are called to repentance. We cannot get around it.

I think we tend to either under or over emphasize the seriousness of our sins. We do not like to think about it and when we do it balloons into something much larger than it really is and then we feel ashamed and hopeless.

Neither is the Way of Jesus.

When we participate in the communal confession, it is easy to repeat it time after time and not hear it anymore. This happens when we do not take time to decide exactly what we are confessing. And the fact that we say “we” and not “I” can depersonalize it further.

Take a moment to hear it again:

We confess our sins not only against God but also our neighbor. We have sinned against God in what we think, say, and do. We have done hurtful things, and we have left undone healing things. We have not given our whole heart to God. We have not cared about our neighbors as much as ourselves.

After we confess, we receive an absolution. There is no reason to confess if we are not going to conscientiously receive the forgiveness, the grace to continue maturing in Christ. If we cannot forgive ourselves or accept God’s forgiveness its likely we find it hard to forgive others.

It is just as easy to hear the absolution over and over and not take it in.

Listen again. When we make a genuine confession or even a haphazard one:

God has mercy on you. Through Jesus, God forgives all your sins. God strengthens you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keeps you in eternal life.

If we find there are certain sins we cannot let go of, it may be time to try private confession with a priest and find some counsel.

It’s a Sign!~

Many Christians look for signs from God. Often when we are trying to make a decision, we will pray for an answer and then wait for an indication of what to do. These signals can come from what someone says to us, a coincidental song on the radio, happening upon a prayer or a scripture verse. We might see the signs in nature.

Sometimes signs are interpreted as supernatural messages from God: a crying statue, images on buildings, lights in the sky. The faithful proclaim, “It’s a sign!”

Nothing could be more Biblical than looking for signs from God. Our spiritual ancestors depended on signs from God to find their way and to be faithful to their Covenant with God.

We are unimaginably blessed by the most glorious sign Jesus left us: the bread and the wine of the Holy Eucharist. In this sign God uses ordinary things to show us what the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ means for us.

The consecrated bread and wine are transformed into the very Body and Blood of Jesus Christ. In this miraculous sign we see the immense self offering of Christ.

The Blessed Sacrament reveals how much God has forgiven us and how we can forgive others. In it we are joined with God and each other in a miraculous and mysterious way. We do not try to explain this experience as much as we glory in its mysterious healing power.

Through the Sacrament we become a living sign of unity, love, mercy, hope, self-examination and self-emptying. We become a signal to the world that an abundant life is available and that eternity is now.
