San Francisco Muslim Community Center

San Francisco Muslim Community Center The San Francisco Muslim Community Center was founded in 1978 by African American Muslims who identify with the leadership of Imam W.

Our mission at the San Francisco Muslim Community Center (SFMCC) is to nurture the growth of faith and to cultivate a healthy and dignified community life grounded in the guidance of the Qur’an and the example of Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him. Deen Mohammed (America's Imam), whose scriptural insights brought great clarity to those seeking to apply the teachings of Al-Islam to chart their cou

rse within American society. In 1981 the SFMCC incorporated as a non-profit 501(c)(3) religious corporation, exclusively for religious purposes which include educational and social services addressing the comprehensive needs of its Muslim constituents in the San Francisco Bay Area, and to the serve the needs of humanity at large when it is feasible and within the scope of our mission. The Muslim population in San Francisco has been constantly in flux. Our initial service focused on the African American practitioners of Islam but expanded to include the diverse Muslim population of San Francisco including Arabs, Africans, Pakistanis, indigenous converts including Europeans, Latinos, and many other too numerous to detail in this pamphlet. We have officiated over 150 marriages. Hundreds of converts and reverts to Islam have learned the fundamentals of our faith, through classes and studies which enable adherents to have a functional knowledge and application of the requisite of Islamic social and ethical behavior as well as spiritual duties such as bearing witness to Allah, prayers, fasting, charity, and pilgrimage. We ask in the Allah's name for your generosity and support in this endeavor. If you require more information please contact: Nai'l Shakoor, Imam SFMCC, [email protected]

Ramadan 2026 Reflection: A Message from the SFMCC Board President

As-Salaamu Alaikum,

We thank each of you who have come out and shared in these blessed nights with us. May Allah shower His mercy upon us all, accept our fasting, our prayers, and every act of sincere worship in this sacred month.

We invite you to join us for our final Ramadan gathering tonight at the San Francisco Muslim Community Center. Let us come together once more in remembrance, gratitude, and fellowship.

More than anything, let us remember: the relationships we are building with one another are far more valuable than any resources we may exchange. What we offer each other in presence, in care, and in sincerity is greater than anything material. These relationships are not static—they grow, they deepen, and they unfold in ways we cannot always foresee when they are nurtured with intention and sincerity.

During Ramadan, we have been brought closer together for the purpose of drawing nearer to our Lord. Seeing one another more often, greeting one another more intentionally, standing shoulder to shoulder—this is not something to leave behind or take lightly. It is something to carry forward.

Let us not allow this spirit to fade. Let us continue this fellowship beyond Ramadan. In our togetherness is our strength. In our communication is our growth. In our service to others is our success.

May Allah keep us united in goodness and increase us in faith, understanding, and love for one another.

We look forward to seeing you tonight, insha’Allah.

In Community,
Jason Ross Brown (Salah Abu Muna)

Bismillah ir-Rahman ir-Rahim, San Francisco Muslim Community Center Receives FAITHS Grant

The San Francisco Muslim Community Center (SFMCC) is grateful to share that we have received $20,000 in general operating support through the FAITHS program of the San Francisco Foundation

We received this news during the blessed month of Ramadan as our community entered the final ten nights, a sacred period for reflection, prayer, and renewed commitment to service. It is a meaningful reminder that the work of building community and caring for our neighbors continues to be recognized and supported.

Our work is guided by the vision of Imam W. Deen Mohammed, who taught that the purpose of a faith community is to cultivate community life. Faith should be reflected in responsible citizenship, service to neighbors, and participation in the shared life of society.

Through fellowship, service, and cooperation with other faith communities across the Bay Area, SFMCC strives to contribute to a spirit of unity, dignity, and care for all people.

We are grateful to the San Francisco Foundation for their continued support of faith communities working for the common good.

Thursday, March 19, is the 29th day of Ramadan (according to naked-eye moonsighting in North America). Please go out after sunset on Thursday to look for the hilal of Shawwal in the western sky.

On Thursday, the probability of a naked-eye sighting of the new crescent moon is very high for much of North America (see chart). If the new moon is sighted on Thursday, we will observe Eid al-Fitr on Friday, March 20.

Go out Thursday to seek the hilal and implement this blessed sunnah. Please send us your sighting reports here (whether positive or negative). We will announce our determination on Thursday night, no later than 8:00pm PT.

May Allah bless you during these sacred days.

Bismillah! See you soon!

As-Salaamu ‘Alaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.

The San Francisco Muslim Community Center (SFMCC) welcomes the believers, neighbors, and all who seek understanding to gather with us for congregational Friday prayer. Jumu’ah brings the Muslim community together in remembrance of Allah and in reflection on the guidance He has revealed for human life. In that gathering the spirit of community life is strengthened and the believer is reminded of his or her responsibility before Allah and toward the wider society.

We come together to hear the khutbah, to establish the salat, and to renew our commitment to living upright lives under the guidance of our Merciful Benefactor and our Merciful Redeemer. The gathering of believers is itself a sign of gratitude to Allah, and it is through such gatherings that faith finds its expression in daily life.

Since 1978, SFMCC has been sustained by volunteers who believe that service to the community is an expression of worship. That tradition continues today as we strive to maintain a space where prayer, reflection, and community life are supported with sincerity and respect.

We welcome you to join us each Friday.

May Allah accept our prayers and keep our hearts firm upon His guidance.

Bismillah!

As-Salaamu ‘Alaikum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakaatuh,
Respected Brothers, Sisters and Community Members,

The San Francisco Muslim Community Center (SFMCC) has moved.

Our community began on Divisadero Street in the Fillmore distrcit of San Francisco in the late 1970s under the direction of Imam Abu Qadir Al-Amin (rahimahullah). He was a student of Imam Warith Deen Mohammed (rahimahullah) — the first Muslim leader to offer prayer at the White House and a national figure who guided generations toward a Qur’an-centered understanding of Islam in America.

Imam Warith Deen Mohammed sent Imam Abu Qadir Al-Amin to San Francisco to establish this community. From those early gatherings on Divisadero Street, SFMCC grew and later established our Mission Street center in the Excelsior.

Now we return to the Fillmore, where our story began, with a permanent home on Haight Street.

While the Haight Street facility is being prepared for use, Salat al-Jumu‘ah (Friday Prayer) will be held at our interim location, beginning Friday, November 7, 2025:

African-American Art & Culture Complex (AAACC)
762 Fulton Street · 2nd Floor Dance Studio
Fridays · 12:30 PM – 2:30 PM
(Accessible facility with elevator access.)

“Indeed, He who ordained the Qur’an for you will surely bring you back to a place of return.”
(Qur’an 28:85)

We continue to offer food support, counseling, and referrals through the Imam’s office and are developing new online programs to strengthen learning and connection.

After Imam Abu Qadir Al-Amin’s passing in 2024, Imam Na’il Shakoor was elected Imam and continues the work of faith, education, and community care.

Please share this news far and wide — with friends, partners, and community members — so that all may know of this return and the blessings it carries.
