Before we cover farmland in solar panels, let’s use the space we’ve already built.

Rooftops sit above homes, warehouses, factories, parking structures, and commercial buildings, often taking up enormous amounts of space without competing with crops or natural habitat.

If we can generate clean energy on those existing surfaces first, we can reduce some of the pressure to convert productive farmland for large solar projects.

Farmland feeds people.

Rooftops can produce power.

Before building over land that grows our food, maybe we should make better use of the roofs we already have.

According to a new report from Data Center Watch, local opposition has reportedly become one of the biggest obstacles facing America's AI data center boom. The report states that during the first three months of 2026, at least 75 data center projects worth approximately $130 billion were blocked or delayed nationwide. Researchers say that figure roughly matches the total number of projects disrupted during all of 2025, marking what the group described as the largest single quarter concentration of blocked and delayed data center projects on record. The report attributes the pushback to community concerns over rising electricity prices, heavy water consumption, noise, air pollution, and land clearing. Data Center Watch also reported that the number of active opposition groups nationwide reportedly more than doubled, growing from 396 groups at the end of 2025 to 833 by March 2026, now active across 49 states. Officials and industry observers say the findings suggest that having enough chips and electricity is no longer enough for developers, who increasingly also need buy in from the communities where these facilities are built.
