*An important word about this night’s Gospel Reading*

It should be noted at _all_ times, and most especially in _these_ times, that references in the Passion Gospel to “the Jews”
being responsible for the actions that resulted in Jesus’ crucifixion are, in fact, references to a small cadre of Jewish
leaders in Jerusalem, who actively opposed Jesus’ ministry and sought to thwart—and end—it. Neither the Jewish
population of Jerusalem, at that time, nor the Jewish people as a whole, at any time, were responsible … let alone in
any way culpable … for Jesus’ death.

Throughout history, a great deal of enmity, hatred, bigotry, oppression, persecution and unspeakable violence has
been waged upon people of the Jewish faith on account of a mistaken understanding, or a willful misinterpretation,
of the Passion Gospel’s meaning. Not only must we not allow this to continue, but we must also take responsibility
and atone for centuries of past wrongs done to the Jewish people in the ‘name’ of the Christian faith; and we must
encourage others to do likewise.

*CONCERNING TENEBRÆ*
_Tenebræ_, which is Latin for “shadows” or “darkness,” is an ancient monastic office for Holy Week. Although it
began as two pre-dawn and daybreak services (known as Matins and Lauds, respectively) held on Maundy Thursday,
Good Friday and Holy Saturday, it soon became the tradition to sing _Tenebræ_ on the evenings preceding these days.
Now that proper liturgies are appointed for these days, _Tenebræ_ is usually said only on the Wednesday evening of
Holy Week.

The theme of _Tenebræ_, as its name conveys, is darkening: the darkening of Jesus’ earthly life as he proceeded,
inexorably and yet obediently, toward death; the darkening of our spirits as we prepare to remember those events
once again, on Good Friday; and the darkening that can mark our Lenten repentance as we contemplate the human
sinfulness that made Jesus’ suffering and death necessary.

Because it is an office (akin to Morning or Evening Prayer) and not a Eucharist, the key elements of _Tenebræ_ are the
reading of Scripture and the singing of psalms. The service is still structured according to the ancient offices of
Matins, which is divided into nocturns, and Lauds. Each nocturn of Matins begins with a psalm(s) (called an
“antiphon”) and then features a series of three readings. Lauds, which more directly anticipates the Crucifixion, is a
series of antiphons, followed by an anthem, a psalm, a collect and a short ceremony: first, the hiding of the last light
remaining in the room; the _strepitus_ —the making of a loud noise, which may call to mind the earthquake that
occurred at the moment of Jesus’ death (Matthew 28:2); and then, because we are—always—people of the
Resurrection, the return of the Christ candle’s light among us. All then depart in silence.

*A note about our worship during Lent*
The season of Lent is the Church’s time of extended, steadfast preparation for the gracious
works of Jesus that took place on the three Great Days (the TRIDUUM, in Latin): the
intimate, abundant blessings—and the new commandment: “love one another”—of Maundy
Thursday … the agony—and all-forgiveness—of Good Friday … and the joy—and
forever-ness—of Easter. To ready ourselves not only to hear of these things, intellectually,
but also to experience and reflect upon them, spiritually, we observe Lent as a time of both
_repentance and renewal:_ a conscious admission of our human sinfulness … an intentional
turning of our hearts, again, to Christ … and a fresh commitment to delight in his will and
walk in his ways (BCP, p 360).
To help foster our focus on repentance and renewal, during Lent we begin our Sunday
worship with the *Penitential Order:* We come to God first with the confession of our sins
and a prayer for mercy, rather than (as is customary) praise and a prayer for pure worship, so
we may recollect our continual need for God’s forgiveness, in Christ; and open our hearts to
Jesus’ call to follow him—to take up _our cross_—in the living of our daily lives.
To mark the more somber, reflective tone of this season, we do not adorn the Altar’s beauty
with *flowers*, and we refrain from saying or singing *ALLELUIA* (or its Hebrew counterpart
*HALLELUJAH*), which is a word of joyful praise of God.
It is also our custom, during Lent, to pray the *Prayer of Humble Access* just before we
receive the Bread and Wine. It reminds us that despite our own sinfulness (“we are not
worthy”), we nevertheless, in God’s mercy, continue to dwell in Christ’s grace.
