Saint Charles Parish is the most southwesterly parish in the United States. Established in 1946, the parish is rich in history and ethnic diversity. With many national backgrounds and cultures represented, including Swiss,

Mexican, Filipino, Asian, African, Irish and more, the parish community welcomes everyone and invites them to celebrate the unity of their Catholic faith. - Hoy celebramos la Natividad de la Virgen María. ¡Feliz cumpleaños, Madre nuestra!🙏❤️‍🔥

Cada 8 de septiembre, la Iglesia celebra una festividad muy especial: la Natividad de la Santísima Virgen María, Madre de Jesús y nuestra. ¡Demos gracias a Dios por habernos regalado a tan excelsa Madre!

San Juan Damasceno la llamó “Nueva Eva”, pues por medio de María, la tristeza de la primera madre se transformó en gozo y el género humano recibió a Cristo, su Salvador.

Aunque los Evangelios no ofrecen detalles sobre el nacimiento de María, la tradición cristiana ha conservado diversos relatos sobre sus orígenes. Una de ellas señala que habría nacido y vivido junto a sus padres, los santos Joaquín y Ana, en el lugar donde actualmente se encuentra la Basílica de Santa Ana en Jerusalén. Estos relatos tienen como fuente algunos textos cristianos antiguos, como el Protoevangelio de Santiago.

La fiesta de la Natividad de María se celebra en Oriente desde el siglo V y llegó posteriormente a Occidente, alrededor del siglo VII. Hoy, la Iglesia celebra con esperanza el nacimiento de la Virgen, reconociendo en ella a aquella por medio de quien Dios quiso entrar en el mundo para nuestra salvación.

At the very start of this beautiful feast, we join the Church in celebrating the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Thank you, Mama Mary, for your faithful “yes” to God, for your motherly love, and for always leading us to your Son.

🙏 Blessed Mother, pray for us and our families. Teach us to trust God as you did and keep our hearts close to Jesus.

- 🙏 Hoy la Iglesia celebra a Santa Teresa de Calcuta, religiosa y fundadora de las Misioneras de la Caridad, quien dedicó su vida a servir a “los más pobres entre los pobres” y a defender la dignidad de toda persona.

Nacida en Albania en 1910, llegó a la India como religiosa y, en 1950, fundó las Misioneras de la Caridad. Su incansable labor por quienes vivían en situación de pobreza y abandono la llevó a recibir el Premio Nobel de la Paz en 1979. Sin embargo, para ella, el mayor reconocimiento era poder llevar el amor de Cristo a quienes más sufrían.

Santa Teresa de Calcuta murió el 5 de septiembre de 1997 y fue canonizada por el Papa Francisco en 2016. Su vida sigue siendo un llamado a convertir la oración en servicio y a descubrir a Cristo en cada persona que necesita nuestra ayuda. Como ella misma enseñaba: “El fruto de la oración es la profundización en la fe. El fruto de la fe es el amor. Y el fruto del amor es el servicio al prójimo”.

- St. Teresa of Calcutta, known worldwide as Mother Teresa, is one of the most recognizable saints of modern times. Her life of radical charity and service to the poorest of the poor continues to inspire people of all faiths and backgrounds.

Named Agnes at birth in 1910, she grew up in Skopje in North Macedonia. She felt called to religious life and joined the Sisters of Loreto, later traveling to India, where she taught at a school in Calcutta for two decades. She became known as a dedicated teacher and later served as the school’s principal.

In 1946, as she traveled by train, she experienced what she later described as a “call within a call.” She felt Jesus inviting her to leave the convent school and serve Him among the poor and destitute in the streets of Calcutta. After a period of discernment and approval from Church authorities, she left the Sisters of Loreto and began her new mission.

Four years later, she founded the Order of Missionaries of Charity, a religious congregation devoted to serving “the hungry, the naked, the homeless, the crippled, the blind, the lepers.” The sisters lived among the poor, offering care and support with dignity, love, and spiritual comfort.

One of her most significant works was establishing a home for the dying destitute called Nirmal Hriday (Pure Heart), where those who had been abandoned on the streets were given care, companionship, and the opportunity to die with dignity. Mother Teresa often described this work as “doing something beautiful for God.”

Although she experienced prolonged periods of spiritual dryness, she remained faithful to her mission and exemplified compassion and joy in serving the most vulnerable. As her global recognition grew, she received numerous honors. She was a recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979. Yet she was humble, pointing attention away from herself and toward Christ present in the suffering.

St. Teresa of Calcutta died on September 5, 1997, and was canonized in 2016. Beginning with twelve recruits, her Missionaries of Charity grew to five thousand nuns and 450 priests serving in 138 countries worldwide.

- Pope St. Gregory the Great stands among the most influential figures in Church history. A pope, theologian, missionary leader, and Doctor of the Church, he helped guide both the Church and society through the challenges of the late sixth century. His leadership, writings, and example continue to shape Catholic life more than 14 centuries after his death.

Born in Rome around 540 into a wealthy and respected Christian family, he received a comprehensive education and entered public service. He served as prefect of Rome, one of the city’s highest civil offices. Yet worldly success did not satisfy him. After his father’s death, Gregory distributed much of his wealth, transformed his family home into a monastery, and became a monk.

Gregory’s wisdom and talents soon led the Church to call him to greater responsibilities. He served as a papal ambassador to Constantinople before being elected pope in 590. Although he preferred the quiet life of a monk, he accepted the office out of obedience and reverence for God’s Will.

As pope, Gregory cared deeply for the poor and worked to ensure that Church resources were used to assist those suffering from disease, famine, and war. He organized a structure to produce and deliver food to the people. It is said he would not eat until the people were fed.

He reformed Church administration, strengthened pastoral care, and encouraged bishops to be faithful shepherds of their people. His missionary vision led him to send St. Augustine of Canterbury and his companions to evangelize the Anglo-Saxons in England, a mission that would have a lasting impact on Christianity in the British Isles and beyond.

Gregory was also a prolific writer. His works on pastoral leadership, prayer, Scripture, and the spiritual life became classics of Christian literature. He is credited with giving the Church the Gregorian Chant, and many of his liturgical reforms are used in today’s liturgies. His humility was evident in the title he preferred for himself: “Servant of the Servants of God.”

- 🙏🏻 Hoy la Iglesia celebra a San Gregorio Magno, Papa, monje y Doctor de la Iglesia, recordado por su sencillez y por entender su autoridad como un servicio. Fue el primer monje en ocupar la Sede de Pedro y adoptó como principio el título de “siervo de los siervos de Dios”.

Durante su pontificado, entre los años 590 y 604, trabajó por la evangelización de nuevos pueblos, promovió el diálogo con distintos gobernantes y fortaleció la vida monástica. También impulsó la renovación de la liturgia y del canto cristiano, dando origen a una tradición musical que posteriormente sería conocida como canto gregoriano.

San Gregorio Magno vivió en una época marcada por crisis y grandes cambios, pero buscó llevar paz y esperanza a la Iglesia y a la sociedad. El Papa Benedicto XVI destacó que supo “crear paz y dar esperanza”, convirtiéndose así en un ejemplo de que la verdadera grandeza nace del servicio humilde a Dios y a los demás. 🙏🏻✨

- Today (August 29) we honor the Memorial of the Martyrdom of Saint John the Baptist, remembering the courageous herald who gave his life in total fidelity to God’s truth and moral law.

Quick facts every Catholic should know about the Martyrdom of Saint John the Baptist:

1️⃣Martyred c. 31–32 AD in the fortress of Machaerus. Celebrated annually on August 29 (the Beheading of St. John the Baptist).
2️⃣Born to Zechariah and Elizabeth, he lived an austere life in the wilderness as the herald of Christ, whom he proclaimed as the “Lamb of God.”
3️⃣Imprisoned by Herod Antipas for fearlessly condemning Herod’s adulterous and incestuous marriage to his brother’s wife, Herodias.
4️⃣Beheaded at the instigation of Herodias after her daughter Salome pleased Herod with a dance and demanded John’s head on a platter.
5️⃣A model of total fidelity to God’s law, proving that love for Christ and Truth permits no compromise.

His witness stands as a powerful reminder that love for truth permits no compromise, even in the face of earthly powers. Saint John the Baptist went before the Lord not only in his birth and preaching, but also in his sacrificial death for righteousness. May his intercession grant us the courage to stand unyielding for the truth, speak with holy boldness, and decrease so that Christ may increase in our lives. w

- Cada 29 de agosto, la Iglesia Católica conmemora el Martirio de San Juan Bautista, el precursor de Jesucristo, quien preparó el camino del Señor y dio testimonio de la verdad hasta entregar su vida.

Juan Bautista fue encarcelado por denunciar públicamente la relación de Herodes Antipas con Herodías, esposa de su hermano. “No te está permitido tenerla”, le decía con valentía, aun sabiendo que sus palabras podían ponerlo en peligro.

Durante un banquete por el cumpleaños de Herodes, la hija de Herodías bailó ante los invitados y agradó tanto al rey que este le prometió concederle cualquier cosa que pidiera. Instigada por su madre, la joven pidió la cabeza de Juan Bautista. Aunque Herodes sintió pesar, cedió ante la presión y ordenó su ejecución. Poco después, la cabeza del santo fue presentada en una bandeja.

San Juan Bautista es el único santo cuya Iglesia celebra tanto su nacimiento, el 24 de junio, como su muerte, ocurrida mediante el martirio. Su veneración es muy antigua y se extendió desde Oriente hasta Roma.

Su martirio nos recuerda que la fidelidad a Dios no admite negociaciones con la verdad. Juan no tuvo miedo de denunciar el pecado ni de defender la voluntad de Dios, incluso cuando hacerlo significaba poner en riesgo su propia vida.

El Papa Benedicto XVI explicó que la vida de Juan Bautista enseña que una relación profunda con Dios permite adquirir la valentía necesaria para dejar que Cristo oriente nuestros pensamientos y acciones.

Hoy, su testimonio nos invita también a vivir una especie de “martirio cotidiano”: permanecer fieles al Evangelio, defender la verdad con caridad y poner a Dios por encima de nuestros propios intereses.

Que San Juan Bautista interceda por nosotros y nos conceda la valentía de vivir nuestra fe con firmeza, sin miedo y con un corazón siempre dispuesto a preparar el camino del Señor.
