Rondo in D major. Mozart. Page two — five thirty-second notes in a row, same note, same finger. Pick it up, put it back down, fast. He'd been messing it up all month in practice.

This is what real practice sounds like when a student can name the exact problem. That's half the work right there.

He almost didn't sign up.

That's what a masterclass does. You come in playing your pieces the way you always have. You leave knowing there's a whole layer you hadn't touched yet.

Our students train 30 minutes to an hour a day. One afternoon with a visiting teacher changed what that hour is for.

Six students. One visiting teacher. A grand piano and a room full of people who came to listen.

🎤 "Già il sole dal Gange" by Alessandro Scarlatti — sung in Italian by Cassia at K&M Music School.

Italian art song is where classical singers learn everything: breath, line, vowel, and the discipline of singing words you had to learn to mean. No backing track, no autotune, no second take. Just a room, a piano, and a voice.

🎹 "Gypsy Fire" by Dennis Alexander — played by Atticus at K&M Music School.

This one is all rhythm and attack. It falls apart unless the hands stay independent and the tempo holds, and nobody gets there except by drilling it slowly, for weeks, back when it sounded like nothing.

That's the part nobody posts. This is the part that comes after.

🎹 Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 23 in A Major, K. 488 — played by Beron at K&M Music School.

A concerto is not a recital piece. It's twenty-some minutes of music where you carry the whole line and there is nowhere to hide. Getting a student to that point takes years of unglamorous weeks. This is the last minute of his.

That's what we're building at K&M — not a hobby, a real musical education, right here in San Diego.
