What's Up Wednesday 03/26/25-04/01/25 -

Hi friends,

Last Sunday we heard a vision from Isaiah about the poor and weary being invited to a great feast. "You who have no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without price!" (Isaiah 55:1) The poor who can't afford food, much less a feast, don't get the leftovers or the bare minimum,, but they get a feast full of rich foods and wines, 'without money and without price'

In the sermon. I suggested that perhaps this isn't only a vision for heaven or the last day, but it suggests a way of life that could be possible for society today. I suggested that perhaps cynicism is something that we need to fast from this Lent- The idea that things can't change for the better.

I ran across this quote this morning by Sharon McMahon stating, "Those who oppose progress want to keep you cynical, because if you believe nothing good can happen or no positive changes will occur, then it helps them maintain the status quo." Not only does cynicism keep us from growing in God's love, but it keeps us immobilized and thus keeps the status quo of injustice in place.

Cynicism and fear are the dry branches that need to be pruned so that we can bear the fruit of love and peace and hope in the world today. We can dream and build the new world that God wants for us together with others- but only if we repent from cynicism and fear, and act with courage in Jesus' love and truth and merciful justice for the world.

It's a rainy day, so might as well join us for Soup Supper at 6:15 tonight! I hope you can make it for good food, connection and fellowship, and Lenten spiritual practices of prayer and dwelling in the Word.

Peace,

What's Up Wednesday 03/12/25-03/18/25 -

‘The truth will set you free.' (John 8:32) This short verse will be our theme for our Lenten Soup Suppers.

I thought about these words from Jesus as a theme for Lent, as Lent is a season to orient ourselves to the truth. We are called to acknowledge our sins and to repent and turn toward God's graciousness and mercy in Christ to be set free. But how can we repent if we don’t know the truth about ourselves and our world?

We live in a time of great misinformation. Issues surrounding immigration are a good example. Some people believe that immigrants or refugees need to come in the ‘right way,’ when the truth is that there are no good legal options for someone to come to the United States when they are fleeing from violence. All options to enter the country legally and apply for asylum at ports of entry have been cut off. Refugee resettlement has also been suspended, meaning those who have been vetted and approved to come to the United States from other nations because of persecution and violence are no longer permitted to do so.

Many believe that the funding freezes of organizations such as Global Refugee, Lutheran Social Services, USAID, and many others, are a normal part of democratic governance and that the executive branch has the freedom to make decisions concerning their distribution. Again, this is not true. The truth is that the impoundment or freezing of these funds is illegal, as they have already been appropriated and earmarked by Congress prior to the current administration assuming office. Under the Constitution, the Congress has the 'power of the purse' and the authority to manage the budget and the distribution of funds.

What can we do when we encounter misinformation? What do we do when we see people suffering from unjust actions of our government? We often feel powerless to help. We feel like we cannot do anything to change the situation of the world and the suffering which results from injustice.

Thankfully, this is also not true! In our baptisms we make a promise to "work for peace and justice." Please note that justice points us towards the larger horizon of God's kingdom. It is not identical to charity, but justice seeks to root out the underlying causes of injustice and inequality, and seeks to put us in a right relation with one another as a society. God's free gift of grace makes our hearts overflow with gratitude. Thus our good works seek the wide horizon of seeing peace and justice realized in the world today.

The truth which sets us free is that there are always actions we can take to work toward justice, and thus love our neighbor in need. We will discuss them at the soup supper tonight!

I hope you can join us at 6:15 for warm and savory soup, Bible Study, and prayer.

Peace,

+Rick Fry

The season of reflection and renewal is upon us. This Lenten Season is themed around "The Truth Will Set You Free" with our Pastor Rick. Below is our schedule for this Lenten Season and we hope you join us for time of fellowship, prayer and exploring curiosity in what God is calling us to now.

"Show me your ways, Lord, teach me your paths. Guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my Savior, and my hope is in you all day long." —Psalm 25:4-5

What's Up Wednesday 03/05/25-03/11/25 -

Hello friends,

Today is the beginning of Lent with Ash Wednesday. We will have Ash Wednesday service tonight at 7pm with the imposition of ashes.

At certain times during the year, we get distracted by the busyness of life. We get weighed down with the cares and worries of life. We forget to pray and overindulge. Then we get lost, and feel disconnected or distant from God and from our spiritual center.

So thank God for the season of Lent! We remember our mortality and that our days are numbered, and we cry out for the presence of God's mercy and our baptismal faith to renew us.

Lent is a time of reorientation. We reorient ourselves to God's grace. We reorient ourselves to our baptismal faith. We reorient ourselves to the truth of our condition and our need for repentance.

We do this traditionally through prayer, fasting, and works of love. Through these spiritual disciplines we seek to find our way back to wholeness and spiritual renewal. Or perhaps through these disciplines it's better to say that God searches for us and finds us, like a shepherd looking for lost sheep in the midst of the wilderness, and carries us home to the great and joyful Paschal feast of resurrection and Easter!

I pray that you find refreshment in the wilderness in our 40 day journey.

We also have Volunteer Appreciation Weekend this weekend! We will have treats and small gifts available on Friday at 11:00 am, and on Saturday from 9am-10:30am. So stop on by the church! This Sunday we will recognize our volunteers during the service with fellowship afterwards. It is our way, as Church and Children's Center, to thank YOU for everything you do to serve our ministry and this community!

Peace,

+Rick Fry

What's Up Wednesday 02/26/25-03/04/25 -

Hello friends,

We had a big weekend last week. We held a memorial service for Jena Brown and commended her to God's love and care with all the saints in light. We had a send-off celebration for our Dee Chilcoat as she moves to Colorado. And we had a fun time bowling with the youth at Parkway last Sunday.

This Saturday the church is hosting a baby shower for Liz Grosser at 1:30 in the fellowship hall. Ladies are welcome to come and celebrate with Liz and others as she is expecting in June. And please keep her in and her family in your prayers in the days and weeks to come!

This Sunday we will have a baptism, as little Cooper Kirk will be baptized and we welcome him into the body of Christ and the family of God. You may remember when Brandon and Melanie, Cooper's parents, joined us for worship a few weeks ago. Let's support this young family and pray for Cooper as he enters his new life in Christ in holy baptism.

In other news, we received a 1000 dollar grant from the Pacifica Synod Matthew 25 fund to start a 'friendly fridge' ministry. We would love for you to join us to discuss the possibilities of this ministry. Please send me an email if you would like to plan how we can expand our food ministry with a wider variety of food and reach more food insecure people.
Peace,

+Rick Fry

This past Friday, Valentine's Day, Ascension hosted a PRIDE 🏳️‍🌈 banner dedication with the surrounding neighborhood. After our previous banner was vandalized, the community stepped up and donated money to buy us a new one. So we did! A representative from the San Diego city council Anthony Hackett spoke a few words in support of LGBTQIA+. We celebrated with a reception of Valentines 💝 cookies and face painting for the kids,. Thanks to everyone who joined us and helped make this wonderful event.

What's Up Wednesday 02/12/25-02/18/25 -

Hello friends,

In the sermon last Sunday, we learned how for the disciples the difference between catching no fish and an unimaginable blessing was the difference between simply moving from one place in the sea to another.

I challenged us to do the same this week, to move from a spot we normally occupy to a different spot, to do something out of your normal routine- make a phone call, go to a different coffee shop or grocery store than you normally do, go to the library instead of ordering a book from Amazon, show up in public in a way you don't normally do, etc.

Have you felt the nudge of the Spirit leading you to any of these things? What blessing might be waiting to be discovered by moving from one place to another? Send me an email if you discovered a blessing in this way and would like to share it!

Peace,

+Rick Fry

P.S. Don't forget about our PRIDE banner dedication happening this Friday, rain or shine! Put on your rain gear and lets celebrate together hope to see you there!

What's Up Wednesday 02/05/25-02/11/25 -

Hello friends,

There have been a lot of rapid and disappointing developments in the political landscape this past week. In addition to the federal funding freeze of Global Refuge (formerly Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Services), it was announced last Sunday that Lutheran Services of America will have their funding shut down as well. (See the announcement by The Association of White Lutherans for Racial Justice below for more detailed information). Lutheran Social Services helps with refugee resettlement, foster home placement and adoptive services, mental health and addiction recovery services, and more. Please see their website for accurate information about the good work they do. A donation to Lutheran Services or Global Refuge are always welcomed and appropriate.

In other news, we will have a PRIDE banner dedication on Friday the 14th at noon. We will gather around the banner for a dedication, and then gather in the courtyard afterwards for a small afterparty and celebrate with some refreshments and face-painting. See the flyer below and invite your friends in the community to join us!

In these anxious times it is important to remember that we are not alone. We have one another to rely upon for support and community, and we have the Spirit of God for strength, comfort, courage and wisdom. I pray for all in our church and our community, and hope you are finding connection and compassion today.

Peace,

+Rick Fry
