In use, abuse, & addiction, family history matters. Twin & adoption studies show a substantial heritable component to addiction risk-forty to sixty %, depending on the substance or behavior. Looking at my own family tree, I could have predicted vulnerability long before I ever picked up a drink.

In 1982, I was a prof musician and despite some heavy drinking, had my one and only hangover. At my physical with a top internist in LA, he reviewed my labs, my alcohol intake, and my strong family history of substance abuse and pronounced me-perfectly healthy. But he looked me straight in the eye and said: "You'll get away with this until you don't get away with it anymore." I haven't had a drop of alcohol since.
