Normal Heights United

Normal Heights United We are eclectic, new, old, sacred, relaxed, and in love with our local community with a global focus. Normal Heights United Methodist Church is open to ALL.

This means that everyone is both welcomed and valued at our events, our worship services, our meals, our spaces, our full community and certainly in our celebrations of communion and baptism. The fullness of our community is open to every single person regardless of age, race, ethnicity, political affiliation, gender identity, sexual orientation, faith history, marital status, mental or physical ability.

Ok, we’re starting out a new weekly post where we do a recap of all the announcements we made in worship on Sunday morning. This week we have Sexuality & Spiritual on Tuesday, Q***r Small Group Thursday night and Sack Lunch Sunday next weekend. Just added to the calendar: a new date for the Young Adult Thrifting, a new concert called “Mystic Hymnal” and a Kids Ministry Family get-together for Ice Cream and Swimming (RSVP online). That’s just the cliff notes, for all the details and a few other events we didn’t include in this update, go to our website calendar.

🦜🦥Summer Kids Camp Registration Is Now Open! 🐆🐒

We’re excited to offer Kids Camp this summer, happening July 27-31 (Mon–Fri) from 9:00 AM–1:00 PM daily! This year’s “Wild” creation care theme will guide campers as they explore ways to care for God’s creation and how those things help us to feel more connected to Love and each other!

We’re celebrating Holy Week starting tomorrow with our Holy Thursday Dinner at 6:30pm, then our Good Friday Service at 7pm, finally it all culminates on Sunday…

⛪️ WORSHIP:
Join us for an absolutely joyful service as we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus! We’ll set the celebratory Easter mood in our Sunday service with music, prayer, preaching, and of course, dancing as we celebrate Communion while a New Orleans style brass jazz band fills up our 100 year old Sanctuary.

🎉 PARADE AT NOON:
At the end of the service, the Euphoria Brass Band will lead us in an Easter celebration parade around the block that ends in the park across the street!

🎷 🍽️ 🎺 PICNIC AT 12:15 PM
Join us immediately after for a picnic in the park, right across the street from church! We’ll provide the Easter hams and drinks, and invite you to bring a side or dessert to share. All are welcome to attend (even if you don’t bring something). There will be shade canopies, tables and chairs, and a new picnic seating area so bring your blankets and beach chairs if you want! Plus, we’ll get to enjoy a continued performance with Euphoria Brass Band – dancing is sure to continue! We will also have an egg hunt for the kids!

6pm this Sunday is our Blue Christmas Service

Some of us are entering the Christmas season and though we are surrounded by holiday cheer, we’re not feeling particularly cheerful. Whether you’ve lost someone this year and it’ll be your first Christmas without them, or you’re grieving the state of the world right now, this service is for you. Join us for a time of lament, contemplation, and comfort, as we gather to weather this season together.

🏳️‍⚧️ 🕯️ Transgender Day of Remembrance calls on us to lament our trans and non-binary siblings whose lives have been unjustly taken from us this year, including all those whose deaths have not been reported, and with special attention to the disproportionate deaths of Black trans women. At least 58 people have passed away this year, 27 of whom were lost to violence, 21 lost to su***de, and 8 have been lost to natural causes. Though we honor these 58 people, we recognize that the true number may be higher, as many incidents go unreported.

Our Christian tradition calls us to remembrance and solidarity with the oppressed. We remember the lives of our trans and non-binary ancestors, honoring them by carrying them with us, learning from them, and being strengthened by their memories. We are called to be in solidarity with our trans and non-binary siblings who are being targeted, persecuted, and used as political pawns. We, as Christians, must stand in the way of those aiming to dehumanize our siblings, to give of ourselves so that our gender variant family may find rest and healing, and to hold those spewing and enacting hate accountable. This has been and will continue to be our task, so that all of God’s beautiful and diverse creation might flourish.

Let us continue to cultivate a world worthy of everyone, in concert with the guidance and determination of our trans and non-binary siblings leading us forward.
