“The Lord hath done great things for us, whereof we are glad.” Psalm 126:3

Some Christians are sadly prone to look on the dark side of everything, and to dwell more upon what they have gone through than upon what God has done for them. Ask for their impression of the Christian life, and they will describe their continual conflicts, their deep afflictions, their sad adversities, and the sinfulness of their hearts, yet with scarcely any allusion to the mercy and help which God has vouchsafed them.

But a Christian whose soul is in a healthy state, will come forward joyously, and say, “I will speak, not about myself, but to the honour of my God. He hath brought me up out of an horrible pit, and out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings: and he hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God. The Lord hath done great things for me, whereof I am glad.” Such an abstract of experience as this is the very best that any child of God can present.

It is true that we endure trials, but it is just as true that we are delivered out of them. It is true that we have our corruptions, and mournfully do we know this, but it is quite as true that we have an all-sufficient Saviour, who overcomes these corruptions, and delivers us from their dominion. In looking back, it would be wrong to deny that we have been in the Slough of Despond, and have crept along the Valley of Humiliation, but it would be equally wicked to forget that we have been through them safely and profitably; we have not remained in them, thanks to our Almighty Helper and Leader, who has brought us “out into a wealthy place.”

The deeper our troubles, the louder our thanks to God, who has led us through all, and preserved us until now. Our griefs cannot mar the melody of our praise, we reckon them to be the bass part of our life’s song, “He hath done great things for us, whereof we are glad.”

Message: God's Work Cannot Be Stopped
Scripture: Acts 5:33–42
Speaker: Stephen Phan

Please join us for the full sermon via our live video stream on Sunday, May 31, 2026, at 09:00 AM. Thank you.
Here is the summary of Stephen Phan’s message:

In Acts 5, the apostles found themselves standing before the Sanhedrin because they boldly proclaimed the name of Jesus. The religious leaders were furious and wanted to put them to death. However, God intervened through an unexpected person, Gamaliel, a respected Pharisee and teacher of the law.
Gamaliel offered wise counsel:
"If their purpose or activity is of human origin, it will fail. But if it is from God, you will not be able to stop these men; you will only find yourselves fighting against God." (Acts 5:38-39)
This passage reminds us that God's plans are unstoppable, His sovereignty reigns over all circumstances, and His wisdom is available to those who seek Him.

I. God's Work Cannot Be Stopped Because God Is Almighty.

A moment that seemed dangerous for the apostles became a testimony of God's sovereign protection and unstoppable purpose.

A. God turns danger into opportunity
The apostles stood before powerful leaders who wanted to silence them, yet God used that very situation to advance His work.

B. God's authority triumphs over earthly powers
The Sanhedrin possessed political and religious influence, but they could not stop what God had ordained. Human authority is limited; God's authority is absolute.

C. God is sovereign over every trial, hardship, and uncertainty
Nothing catches God by surprise. Even when circumstances appear unfavorable, God remains in control and works all things according to His purpose.
When facing opposition, uncertainty, or hardship, remember that God's plans cannot be hindered. Trust His power and His timing.

II. God Can Use Anyone to Accomplish His Purpose
One of the most remarkable aspects of this story is that God used Gamaliel, a Pharisee, to preserve and protect the apostles.

A. Gamaliel participated in God's plan through wisdom, restraint, and discernment
Though he was not one of the apostles, God used his voice to influence the outcome of the situation.

B. God moves hearts when His people pray and trust Him
As believers seek God earnestly and submit to His sovereign will, He works in the hearts of people in ways we may never expect.

C. God raises up individuals to encourage and strengthen His people
Throughout Scripture and history, God has consistently used ordinary people to accomplish extraordinary purposes.

D. God is not limited
God is not confined by human expectations. He can use friends, strangers, leaders, coworkers, family members, and even opponents to fulfill His will. Never underestimate what God can do through someone. Pray faithfully and trust that God is already working behind the scenes.

III. Don't Just Learn God's Word—Walk in His Wisdom

The religious leaders knew the Scriptures, yet many failed to recognize Jesus as the Messiah standing before them.

A. Knowledge alone is not enough
Many spiritual leaders possessed extensive biblical knowledge but lacked spiritual discernment.

B. True wisdom begins with reverence for God
Wisdom is more than information. It is a heart that honors God, obeys His Word, and remains open to His work.

C. Earthly wisdom produces destructive fruit
James warns that earthly wisdom is characterized by bitterness, envy, and selfish ambition. These attitudes lead to disorder and every evil practice.

D. God's wisdom produces godly character
God's wisdom is:
* Pure
* Peace-loving
* Considerate
* Submissive
* Full of mercy
* Fruitful
* Impartial
* Sincere
When we walk in God's wisdom, our lives reflect Christ and bring glory to Him. Don't settle for merely knowing Scripture. Ask God to transform your heart so that His wisdom shapes your decisions, relationships, and daily walk. Amen

“For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh.” Galatians 5:17

There is a constant struggle between the old nature and the new in every believer’s heart. The old nature is very active, and loses no opportunity of plying all the weapons of its deadly armory against newborn grace. On the other hand, the new nature is ever on the watch to resist and destroy its enemy. Grace within us will employ prayer, faith, hope, and love to cast out the evil. It puts on the “whole armor of God” and wrestles earnestly. These two opposing natures will never cease to struggle so long as we are in this world.

However, with Jesus, who is always with us, the new-born nature is more than a match for its foes. Are you fighting with the adversary today? Are Satan, the world, and the flesh, all against you? Do not be discouraged. Fight on! For God Himself is with you, Jehovah Nissi is your banner, and Jehovah Rophi is the healer of your wounds. You will overcome, for who can defeat Omnipotence? Fight on! Looking unto Jesus. Although the conflict may be long and hard, the victory will be sweet.

Jesus, the Captain of our salvation, assures us that we will eventually become more than conquerors through Him who loves us.

“Cast thy burden upon the Lord, and he shall sustain thee.” Psalm 55:22

Care, even though exercised upon legitimate objects, if carried to excess, has in it the nature of sin.

The precept to avoid anxious care is earnestly inculcated by our Saviour, again and again; it is reiterated by the apostles; and it is one which cannot be neglected without involving transgression: for the very essence of anxious care is the imagining that we are wiser than God, and the thrusting ourselves into His place to do for Him that which He has undertaken to do for us. We attempt to think of that which we fancy He will forget; we labour to take upon ourselves our weary burden, as if He were unable or unwilling to take it for us. Now this disobedience to His plain precept, this unbelief in His Word, this presumption in intruding upon His province, is all sinful.

Yet more than this, anxious care often leads to acts of sin. He who cannot calmly leave His affairs in God’s hand, but will carry His own burden, is very likely to be tempted to use wrong means to help Himself. This sin leads to a forsaking of God as Our Counsellor, and resorting instead to human wisdom. This is going to the “broken cistern” instead of to the “fountain;” a sin which was laid against Israel of old.

Anxiety makes us doubt God’s lovingkindness, and thus our love to Him grows cold; we feel mistrust, and thus grieve the Spirit of God, so that our prayers become hindered, our consistent example marred, and our life one of self-seeking. Thus, want of confidence in God leads us to wander far from him; but if through simple faith in his promise, we cast each burden as it comes upon him, and are “careful for nothing” because he undertakes to care for us, it will keep us close to him, and strengthen us against much temptation.

“Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on thee, because he trusteth in thee.”
