Easter day…the Lenten days of fasting, almsgiving and repenting are over. Christ’s resurrection vividly shows that love is always stronger than fear or hate or even death. Certainly, something to celebrate. And given what we have all been through these past few months, we all really need reasons to celebrate and find joy.

So, why do my thoughts keep returning to one of the readings during Lent “Amen, amen, I say to you unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains just a grain of wheat; but if it dies, it produces much fruit.”

Lent calls us to “die to self” so that we can fully use our gifts and talents to foster the city of God here and now. The season of Lent invites us to move away from being part of the “stiff necked” crowd to become people who depend on God, who wish a strong relationship with God. It gives us space to move away from the “I do it myself” to seeing that I need God, that God’s guidance will lead me where I called to go. And to see that I don’t have to “do it myself”, because God is always there, always ready to help me move towards God’s love and forgiveness.

While I wished I am no longer a member of the “stiff necked people”, alas, it is not true. I have not ‘risen’ above my fears and beyond my wants. But that is why we should celebrate the joys of Easter, because Jesus is alive now and forever. And that Jesus will help us to be with Him. Death has been conquered, and we should not be afraid. Jesus is alive whether I believe it or not. Just like in the Gospel reading, Peter and John might not understand the Scripture at that time that Jesus has risen from dead, we might not sense the joy of Easter because of the sufferings we still have. But God has always been journeying with us, and that good will always overcome evils. All we have to do is to continue to keep our gaze on Jesus. Happy Easter

Holy Silence

Today we as a Church observe a holy silence. It is a day of waiting and anticipation. There are no liturgical celebrations during the day, the tabernacle remains empty, the Church is still and silent, awaiting the resurrection of our Savior.

For us, it is not hard to wait, because we know the end of the story. We know it doesn’t end with Christ’s passion and death on the cross. We know that He will rise. It is easy for us to hope when we know the ending.

I can only imagine the fear and desolation that the apostles and those closest to Jesus experienced on this day. Their friend, their teacher, their Lord, has suffered greatly and has died a gruesome death. He is no longer by their side. What does this mean for them? Were the past few years of following Jesus in vain? Did they leave behind their livelihoods and families for nothing? The anxiety and the paranoia of what’s to come must be an incredible weight. All hope seems to be lost.

But we know that Jesus keeps His promise. The temple is rebuilt on the third day. He rises. Hope is not lost. Jesus will claim victory over death and will pay the debt for our sins.

There may be moments in our lives where like Jesus’ followers, we are in complete desolation. We don’t know how the story ends. We feel completely alone and God is nowhere to be found. We cry out to Him, but we get silence in return.
But even in the silence, God is working, He is there. A holy silence. He calls us to embrace the stillness. To trust in Him, and await His saving power. Because our God will never abandon us.

“On this Holy Saturday, a day of silent anticipation, fill me with hope, especially when I am tempted to despair. May I place all my trust in You and receive the abundance of Your grace. Jesus, I trust in You.” Amen.
