Welcome to St. John's United Church of Christ in San Bruno, California.

Today we continue our Empowered series through the Book of Acts with a message titled:

Empowered to Stand
Acts 3:1–4:31

Peter and John boldly proclaimed Jesus in a world that resisted them. Their courage did not come from their own strength but from the power of the Holy Spirit at work within them. In this message, we explore how the Spirit empowers believers to see those others overlook, speak faithfully about Jesus, stand firm when faithfulness becomes costly, and continually depend upon God's presence and power.

No matter what challenges we face, the same Holy Spirit who empowered the early church continues to empower God's people today.

The true goal? Not just to survive, but for those who don't know Christ's love to encounter Him through our church's witness. We reach out through this camera, our website, and every door the Lord opens.

The same Holy Spirit that empowered early believers continues to sustain and empower churches today, from their very founding to their present-day ministries. That same spirit is still active.

The early 'settlers' were missionaries, carrying their faith into a new, unfamiliar world. Today, churches are rediscovering this truth: we are missionaries in a changing world, called to remain faithful.

In Acts, believers prayed for boldness to speak God's word. This ancient prayer still resonates, urging us to find courage in our faith today. What does boldness mean for you?

We are called to bear witness to Jesus Christ. The question isn't if the road ahead feels easy, but if we will trust God for what the early Church asked for.

Our confidence shouldn't rely on personal achievements, wealth, or influence. True, lasting confidence is found in faith. If you're worried about the future, remember that the church's future has never depended on favorable odds.

This week, I stumbled across a profound piece of our history: the original, handwritten German minutes of our congregation's founding era. What amazes me most is that even 109 years ago, God was already shaping the spiritual DNA of St. John’s into who we are today.

In one entry from July 1917—in the midst of massive anti-German sentiment shortly after the US entered WWI—these early settlers gathered what little they had to send care packages to the “Kriegsopfer in der Heimat” (war victims in the homeland). At a time when doing so carried immense social and political risk to themselves, they chose compassion over fear. That alone is beautiful, but the secretary's next sentence is what truly echoes across a century.

Writing down the reason for their sacrifice, she noted: “Das ist keine Großzügigkeit. Das ist Gottesliebe.”(“This is not mere generosity. This is the very love of God.”)

They knew that sharing what they had wasn't just optional, superficial charity—it was a sacred reflection of God's heart. That exact same spiritual identity still drives us at St. John’s today as we continue our vision of connecting real people to a real God in a real way!

The church's mission has always been built by those willing to trust God in new places. This was true for early settlers and remains true today.
