Peace

Great peace have those who love Your law, and nothing causes them to stumble.
Psalm 119:165

Peace is the ever elusive, all-consuming desire of every person. It always seems just beyond our reach and an impossible goal in a world gone mad. Yet, this Scripture gives a promise for peace that can be easily realized by anyone. It says that if we love God’s Word, we will have peace.

The word for “peace” used here is the well-known Hebrew word shalom. We tend to think of shalom merely as a simple greeting. It does, of course, mean peace, safety, and tranquility. Yet inherent in the meaning of the word is completeness, wholeness, health, prosperity, fullness, rest, and harmony. Thus peace is much more than the absence of war and conflict; it is the wholeness that the entire human race seeks.

Where do we need the wholeness of God’s peace in our lives? As we fall in love with His Word, peace will naturally be the by-product.

New Year. New Beginnings.

"He humbled you, causing you to hunger and then feeding you with manna, which neither you nor your ancestors had known, to teach you that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD."
Deuteronomy 8:3

At the beginning of His earthly ministry, Jesus quoted Deutornomy 8:3 when He faced Satan’s snares in the wilderness. By doing so He made the knowledge of the Word a powerful weapon against the attack of the adversary. Because the parallel is used of Israel’s receiving the daily supply of manna, we know that the believer is to seek and feed upon a regular, daily portion of God’s Word. Psalm 119:165 adds that the Word of God has provided for us a solid base that will keep us firm and secure no matter what circumstance we face.

Let no one suppose spiritual survival is possible for long without nourishment from the Word of God. 1 Peter 2:2 declares that God’s Word is as essential to the believer as milk to a newborn child. It is not an option!

As you begin a new year, commit to daily spending time in the Word! It is a discoverable, definitive, discerning resource for meeting every challenge. Whatever you face this year, God’s promises are there, for you.

A Crossroads in History

Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David.
Luke 2:4

In a poignant, soul-stirring way, it is interesting to watch the management of our sovereign God as He makes Bethlehem a crossroads of human history. He moves the Emperor of Rome to pass an edict which will result in Joseph’s return to his family’s hometown, and, thereby, Jesus will be born in Bethlehem. He moves the stars and planets to a unique convergence which will prompt a group of eastern wise men to study this phenomenon in conjunction with ancient Scriptures and come to worship at Bethlehem. He arranges for a crowded inn, so that His Son, forced to be birthed in a stable, will never be accused of having been advantaged through “high” birth.

None of these things happened by accident. They were arranged, strategized, and executed by the God of the universe. As we come back to Bethlehem this Christmas, it is wise for us to think on these things. In doing so, remember that He’s equally interested in assuring the success of things in your life.

Resisting the World’s Spirit

Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, [a]wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, saying, “Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? For we have seen His star in the East and have come to worship Him.”When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him.
Matthew 2:1-3

We should not be surprised at the dynamic tension Christmas creates. On the one hand, our world fills its stores in commercial pursuit, and on the other, it argues against Christianity’s right to put nativity scenes in public squares. It is the way of the world’s spirit to want the profit and resist the prophecies.

When Herod met the regal wise men who seemed to promise commerce from the East, he was ready to assist their journey. It was good business to cooperate with wealthy men travelling through his territory. When he discovered their journey had been prompted by prophecies of another king, Herod was troubled.

Don’t be distracted by the misconceptions or distortions of the world’s spirit at Christmastime. May we never become embittered by that spirit’s protests, as it is being “troubled” by our pursuit of the King and our desire to worship Him.

Simply, stay on course. The pathway to Bethlehem may be doubted by the world, but it is still the pathway to hope and salvation for all who believe

Song of Deliverance

You are my hiding place; You shall preserve me from trouble; You shall surround me with songs of deliverance.
Psalm 32:7

“Deliverance” is one of the giant words of the Scriptures. It is a broadly inclusive term which describes: (1) forgiveness of sin, (2) redemption from eternal death, (3) recovery of physical health, (4) release from spiritual bo***ge, and (5) rescue from difficult situations. As our Savior, Jesus has become our Deliverer. The essence of the meaning of salvation is deliverance.

So when we read of “songs of deliverance,” we well may tune our souls to the promise and potential of such power being put on human lips. David sang, and Saul was relieved of demonic oppression. Jehoshaphat’s choir sang, and their enemies were conquered. Paul and Silas sang, and an earthquake shook their chains free, and a Roman guard along with his whole household were brought into God’s kingdom. Songs of deliverance are real instruments of divine grace.

As the carols of Christmas fill the air, let each one be more than a ritual. Lift these testimonies of the King who has come, and let the Holy Spirit fill your praise until they become songs of deliverance! The King is here!

The Father’s Gifts

For I say, through the grace given to me, to everyone who is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think soberly, as God has dealt to each one a measure of faith.
Romans 12:3

These words preface a list of gifts that our Father and Creator has given in varied measures and groupings to human beings. The seven categories noted in Romans 12:6–8 have sometimes been called “the motivating gifts” of God. In other words, God has given everyone “a measure of faith,” that is, a beginning point for responding to His will for them. This starting point is activated as each person realizes and uses the unique and distinct gift they have. Each of us are called to serve others by acting on the inclinations God has placed within us to motivate our vocations and our ministries.

In this December season, come before Father God with both gratitude and teachableness. Gratitude to thank Him for the fact He has invested something of His creative potential in us. Then teachableness, saying, “Father, show me more about how the gifts You have given me (some of which I may not even yet recognize or acknowledge) might glorify You as I fulfill Your creative purposes invested in me

Expectation and Invitation

And the Spirit and the bride say, “Come!” And let him who hears say, “Come!” And let him who thirsts come. Whoever desires, let him take the water of life freely.
Revelation 22:17

“Oh Lord, come!” is the continual cry of the Spirit within the Church, as we long for our heavenly Bridegroom.

This cry echoes an equally earnest call, which is the invitation of Christ Himself given through His Bride to the lost is, “if anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink” (John 7:37). God calls to mankind in a generous, yet urgent, way to “come to the waters” of life (Is. 55:1).

Expectation and invitation go together. The Lord’s return and world evangelism are vitally connected. With our hands stretched up we cry, “Jesus, come back!” With our hands stretched out we call, “Come to Jesus!” So ends the book of Revelation and the Bible, and so will such a passionate cry and call end human history! Amen!

Announcing Forgiveness

And when He had said this, He breathed on them, and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.”
John 20:22-23

As the Father sent His Son to announce forgiveness, so Jesus sent His disciples to do the same. Jesus gave to His followers “the keys of the kingdom” so that “whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven” (Matt. 16:19).

Forgiveness of sin is “the key” that unlocks the relationship between God and man. Such forgiveness is possible because Jesus died and rose for our sins. We are sent as His ambassadors to announce this good news and proclaim the forgiveness of sins for those who repent and believe in Jesus. What an awesome task! Through the Spirit’s power, our words become the word of God, as we implore people on Christ’s behalf, “be reconciled to God” (2 Cor. 5:20).

Let Jesus Himself again speak peace to us! Hear and respond to His invitation to “receive the Holy Spirit.” Let Him send us as He was sent by His Father, empowered fully to forgive freely in His Name!

God’s Priorities

Thus says the LORD of hosts: “Consider your ways!”
Haggai 1:5

Nearly two decades had passed since God’s people returned from Babylon and laid the foundation of the temple in Jerusalem. The initial opposition that delayed further building had long passed, but the people did not get back to building the temple. They were preoccupied with building their own houses while God’s house lay in ruins! Therefore, the Lord sent drought and recession and blew away their profits (Hag. 1:9–11).

Haggai calls the people to put first things first, to get back to rebuilding the temple. And they did so in less than a month! Then the drought and recession ended! The Lord had amazing plans for this second temple. Its glory would transcend even Solomon’s temple, for into its courts would come the Messiah Himself, and He would bring peace (Hag. 2:6–9; Mal. 3:1).

Today, God’s dwelling is in His people, not in temples made with human hands. Are we preoccupied with God’s priorities or ours? Are we extending His kingdom or ours?

Priestly Kingdom

'"And you shall be to Me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.' These are the words which you shall speak to the children of Israel."
Exodus 19:6

God promised to bless Abraham and make him a blessing to all nations. He repeated this promise to his son, Isaac (Gen. 26:5, 6) and to his grandson, Jacob (Gen. 28:12–14), as well. God chose Abraham and his descendants so they could not only know Him, but also make Him known. Years later God sent Moses to command Pharaoh, “Let my people go!” But why? “That they might worship Me!” (Ex. 4:23). Their worship of the one true God was to be a witness to all nations of God’s power to save.

This world is under the rule of the god of this age, the devil. But God’s redemptive mission has begun. King Jesus came to set His people free to live and to praise God’s glory. His liberated people are His “special treasure.” As His loyal subjects they are a “kingdom of priests” with the priestly duty of proclaiming the gospel of God, so that the nations might become an offering acceptable to God, sanctified by the Holy Spirit (Rom. 15:16).

Getting Spiritually Dressed

Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.
Ephesians 6:11

It is unthinkable! No one would do it! No one in his right mind would leave the house for the day naked. Not only does it break social convention, but it leaves you unprotected from the elements.

However, Christians leave their homes everyday unprotected from the spiritual elements they will face. As surely as we are naked without our clothes, we are just as naked for spiritual combat without our spiritual armor. The armor of God is something we put on and keep on, because every day is a day of spiritual conflict. The unprotected are victimized or wounded.

The assault of the devil is unrelenting, cunning and constantly searching for areas of opportunity where are our defense system is lowered or uncovered. Whether to cause us to doubt God’s love for us, compromise our integrity or confuse us with doctrines of lies and half truths, our only defense is to dress for battle every day. Girded with truth, covered by righteousness, shielded by faith and transformed by salvation, we are ready to face the day.
