!Visioning a New Offering!

Hi! It's Carla here. Hoping this finds everyone well.

I'm dreaming more ideas for the bookstore.
This one idea is near and dear to my heart and soul.
I'd like to start a journaling group here at the bookstore.
!No experience necessary!
!Questions welcome!
Journaling for me is an "always we begin again"
(in the words of St. Benedict)
process, a journey, not a destination.
So, even if you've never journaled a page in your life
I'd want this to work for you.

One of the sections we are thoughtfully adding to is our fiction section. We lean toward books that "nurture the sacred imagination" Give us some fiction titles you think might fit our niche for this shelf.

"We live in an era in which there is too much information but not enough knowledge, and even less wisdom. This excess of information makes us arrogant and then it makes us numb. We must change this ratio and focus more on knowledge and wisdom. For knowledge we need books, slow journalism, podcasts, in-depth analyses and cultural events. And for wisdom, among other things, we need the art of storytelling. We need the long form."

Writer Elif Shafak on why we still need novels

"or just that reading a book not front to back can be a delight” (p. 148 from The Book of (More) Delights by Ross Gay
availabe on the shelf here St. Mark's Episcopal Church Book Store

Here's a little "wandering" from me (Carla) from my kinda of dormant blog "Reading and Writing a Life"

I opened this book of Ross Gay’s this morning just for a “look, see.” I own his Inciting Joy and The Book of Delights. This second book of his free flow, fast write short essays on delight is on my list to add to my shelves. He is fast becoming one of my favorites – one who when they write a book I add it to my collection. The idea of just opening a book, random, luck of the draw, luck of the page…especially with a book of stream of consciousness type writings…

I love the idea of this! A dip into a place unknown, not the beginning or the end, maybe not even a middle…just a surprise point in the essay that sets me up for a wandering of my own, across my mind, onto the blank page in my journal. There is something about just beginning at a mid-page phrase or word even that is exciting…a bit rebellious even…taking a peek further in than p. 1.

It makes me stop, smile to myself and delight in words on the page. Thank you Ross Gay.

"Wandering along the cobblestone paths, Sophia’s shoulders felt heavy and her back ached. Nevertheless, she stopped in various shops to say hello to friends and tell them where she was headed."

What is your current relationship to the concept of community? Do you experience it as a support system, a burden, something longed for, an ambiguous unknown?

Inside the Bookstore

I don't know about the rest of you but I can feel the shift in the seasons. School is out, vacations have started, schedules are shifting. Vacation Bible School starts next week here at St. Mark's. Temperatures are heating up and thank heavens for the rain we've had. Driving down Broadway into downtown this morning I was in awe of all the new green growth along the road.

We've easing into this rhythm of summer here in the bookstore. Some things will stay the same, we've still figuring out some new things but we are here. Our comfy purple couch and different chairs are ready and waiting in this little sanctuary. I'm bringing in some new books every time I order and keeping our good sellers available. Let me know if you have a recommendation or suggestion that you feel would fit onto one of our shelves. We love your input.
