Saint Philip's Episcopal Church

Saint Philip's Episcopal Church Missionary District of West Texas Rev. R. W. B. Elliott, Bishop of the Missionary District.

The establishment of an Episcopal Church for Black people in the Missionary District of Western Texas, later to become the Diocese of West Texas, began in 1877 with the dream of the Rt. The Bishop envisioned the day when there would be Episcopal Churches in the Missionary District where Negroes could worship God in the great Anglican tradition. He appealed to the clergy and laity of the church to

labor among the Negroes to establish Sunday Schools for them. He recognized that at that time were would be those who would look upon such efforts as idealistic, fanatical, silly sentimentalism, designing priests, and hirelings. Yet, said the Bishop, it is also true that the regenerative spirits that raised from the dead ancient society, came through the preaching of men who were called fools, babblers, crazy men who were pointed out as pestilent fellows who were besides themselves. Heirs to the succession, it is to be expected we should be heirs also to the reproaches. He admonished his hearers to be daring in their work, audacious in their undertaking, venturing much for Christ’s sake; to be fools in Christ’s cause. Bishop Elliott’s retirement, however, prevented him from seeing his dream for Negroes come to fruition in his Missionary District.

Our kids did a great job Flowering the Cross before Easter Sunday Service! 🌺 We Flower the Cross 🌹 as a symbol of the transformation from death to eternal life. ☺️

Rev Joyce also did a great job doing the children's sermon with the kids before the adult service. Kids are our future! It's important that we guide them on the right and glorious path to God.

Join us next Sunday at 10am!

Tonight is Maundy Thursday. This is the night of Jesus' last supper with his 12 disciples before he was ultimately crucified.

In remembrance of Jesus' garments being stripped from him before the crucifixion, we strip the altar. You will see no linens, no flowers, no chalice or paten.

When the soldiers had crucified Jesus, they took his clothes and divided them into four parts, one for each soldier. They also took his tunic; now the tunic was seamless, woven in one piece from the top.
So they said to one another 'let us not tear it, but cast lots for it to see who will get it.' This was to fulfill what the Scripture says, 'They divided my clothes among themselves, and for my clothing they carry lots.'
(John 19:23-24, *Psalm 22:18)

Join us tomorrow at noon for the stations of the cross on Good Friday.

It's Holy Week!

The forty days of Lent in preparation for the celebration of Christ's resurrection on Easter Sunday, culminate in Holy Week during which Jesus entered Jerusalem in triumph, celebrated his last supper with his disciples, was crucified, died and God raised Jesus to new life. 🙌🏽🙏🏽

We invite you to join us this week at each of our services where EVERYONE is welcome! Bring your family and friends and come worship with us!

We honor Harriet Tubman, abolitionist, Underground Railroad conductor, Civil War scout, and fierce advocate for justice. Born into slavery, she escaped and returned again and again to lead others to freedom—trusting visions and dreams from God. Later in life, she opened her home to orphans and the elderly, founded schools, and joined the fight for women’s rights. Her courage, faith, and tireless resistance made her a prophet of liberation.

“Give us vision and courage to stand against oppression and injustice and all that works against the glorious liberty to which you call all your children.”

We pray that your week gets off to a great start! Happy Monday everyone!
