To our faithful San Antonio/New Braunfels RTB community,
Our wonderful chapter president, Amy Hardy, has been called to a new chapter in her career which will necessitate her moving out of state. After consultation with Reasons to Believe headquarters the chapter leadership has decided to put the monthly chapter meetings on pause until such time as a new chapter president is installed. We will notify you with any developments, and thank you for your prayers.

Sincerely,

The San Antonio/Braunfels RTB chapter leadership

Next Saturday, the 12th, the Founder and President of Reasons To Believe Hugh Ross will be speaking at the Austin chapter! All are invited to attend.

Topic: "Addressing an Atheist's Questions About the Cosmos"

Dr. Ross will be sharing about his conversation with an atheist physicist. Why is the universe so vast and old? Doesn't the mediocrity principle prove there is nothing special about Earth and humans? What about decay and natural disasters? And more! Learn about how the heavens declare the glory and righteousness of God.

The Hard Problem of Consciousness

Regarding this issue Wikipedia states the following: Annaka Harris poses the hard problem as the question of "how experience arise[s] out of non-sentient matter". David Chalmers first formulated the problem in his paper Facing up to the problem of consciousness (1995) and expanded upon it in his book The Conscious Mind (1996). His works have proven to be provocative. Some, such as David Lewis and Steven Pinker, have praised Chalmers for his argumentative rigour and "impeccable clarity." Others, such as Daniel Dennett and Patricia Churchland, believe that hard problem is really more of a collection of easy problems, and will be solved through further analysis of the brain and behaviour. Consciousness is an ambiguous term. It can be used to mean self consciousness, awareness, the state of being awake, and so on. Chalmers uses Thomas Nagel's definition of consciousness: the feeling of what it is like to be something. Consciousness, in this sense, is synonymous with experience.

So what is the best explanation for the subjective reality that we all experience and are most sure exists? Can human beings be fully explained by physics and chemistry or is a nonphysical mind required? This talk will address philosophical and scientific studies that shed light on the Hard Problem of Consciousness.

The speaker, John Darms, has been involved with apologetics in areas of science, philosophy and religion for over 30 years. He worked for over 40 years as an electrical engineer/software engineer. This work included design of computer hardware and software systems involved with Radar Jamming (ECM), military avionics, cellular infrastructure and high-speed options trading.

Don't forget we have a meeting this Saturday!

Has our Bible been corrupted by additions and omissions over time such that it is not the authentic and reliable Word of God? Several religious movements and false doctrines are premised on this claim. It is also a popular charge by both skeptics and liberal clerics. But is it true? Come and learn the exciting scientific and historical discoveries, such as the Dead Sea Scrolls, that repudiate this claim. It will give you another way to give a reason for the hope you have in Christ (I Peter 3:15).

He is retired and living in Kerrville with his wife, Pattie, after working in a variety of careers including most recently a pastor at a small church in Alaska. Before that he was a consultant to a consortium of Texas electric utilities, a missionary in Central Mexico, an international environmental consultant, a speech writer for a former Texas governor, an urban planner, and a reporter for the Amarillo Globe News. As a former skeptic himself, he is interested in exploring and sharing evidences for the Christian faith.

As always, it will start at 10:00AM at New Braunfels Christian Academy. 220 FM 1863, New Braunfels We hope to see you there!

This Saturday at 10:00AM at New Braunfels Christian Academy, Ed LaBelle will be addressing us.

Topic: The Heavens Declare the Glory of God: Using Science to Share the Beauty and Majesty of God's Creation

There is a perception within the Christian church that science and faith are often in conflict. In this talk, Ed will explore the current decline in church attendance and membership and show how it is tied to this perceived conflict between science and faith. He will show how Christians with a background in the sciences can use dual revelation (God's Word and God's world) to overcome this conflict and reveal the glory of God's creation.

Ed LaBelle has a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Texas A&M University. Ed is an officer with the Austin chapter of Reasons To Believe faith and science ministry. He is a member of Bethany United Methodist Church in Austin where he is a coordinator for their youth confirmation class. Ed has been an amateur astronomer since 2009 and enjoys sharing his passion for astronomy through various outreach programs. He founded the Psalm 19 Astronomy sidewalk astronomy ministry in 2016 to share with the general public the beauty and majesty of God's creation through astronomy.

*** Astrophysicst Hugh Ross is the founder and president of Reasons To Believe and is talking on his new book on climate change. You won't want to miss it! Full online on YouTube. Live Saturday the 13th 10AM-Noon. ***

New temperature records reveal that the climate of the past 9,500 years has been miraculously stable. This extreme climate stability, optimal for humanity, yields yet another fine-tuning argument for God.
Certain politicians and scientists, however, insist that our only option for sustaining climate stability are draconian cuts in both the world economy and standard of living. Based on biblical principles of
creation management, I will show how climate stability can be sustained while enhancing the world’s ecosystems and boosting the economic wellbeing and standard of living of all the peoples of the world. I will
allow times for Q&A.

About Our Speaker:
Dr. Hugh Ross has a degree in physics from the University
of British Columbia and a National Research Council of
Canada fellowship, Dr. Ross earned a PhD in astronomy
from the University of Toronto. Prompted by family, friends,
and colleagues, he founded Reasons to Believe in 1986, to bring scientific evidence for Christianity to light. Dr. Ross travels the
globe speaking on the compatibility of advancing scientific discoveries with the timeless truths of Christianity. His organization, Reasons to Believe (RTB), is dedicated to demonstrating, via a variety of
resources and events, that science and biblical faith are allies, not enemies.

Reasons to Believe's (RTB) mission is to spread the Christian gospel by demonstrating that sound reason and scientific research—including the very latest dis...

This Saturday: "God, Black Holes, and the End of the Universe"

The late physicist John Wheeler once said, “The world is a crazy place, and the way it’s organized is truly crazy. But we have to be crazy enough to see what that way is if we’re really going to understand this physical world. It’s not just a matter of nice, simple formulas.” Nowhere is this more evident than with nature’s most enigmatic entities, black holes. Dr. Salviander will reveal some of the mystery and wonder surrounding these cosmic oddities, the history of their discovery, and how black holes ultimately teach us a very important lesson about the God of the Bible.

About Our Speaker: Dr. Salviander is an astrophysicist and Christian apologist. She was a researcher at UT for sixteen years, where she studied quasars and the evolutionary relationship between supermassive black holes and galaxies. Dr. Salviander converted from atheism to Christianity while studying for her doctorate, in large part because of the compelling evidence for God she observed through her scientific work.

Apologies for the late send-out. We'll be meeting at New Braunfels Christian Academy in their cafeteria, at 10AM Saturday. Masks required when entering/leaving, and there should be plenty of space to distance while seated.

He will go over additional ideas on maintaining climate stability and ways we can help boost the economy while doing so. It is sure to be educational and thought provoking!

The presentation will start at 10:30 AM Texas time. Join this Zoom room:
