As Paul makes his way back to Jerusalem, he stops at Miletus and sends for the Ephesian elders. His farewell address to them is the only speech we have recorded in Acts to Christians. Paul's words to the Ephesian elders speak powerfully to each of us about the importance of loving Jesus' church. His words speak powerfully to elders to love and nurture and protect the flock. Paul's life and vision for what it means to truly live as a Christian challenges us to live our lives for the glory of God and the blessing of others. God touches each of us in many ways. I hold that Jesus touches us when we step into His loving care thru the Holy Ghost. Some of us do and will fight that touch, however when we do so by faith we grow in that faith like the mighty mustard seed, small at the start, but deep in our roots. Paul wasn't just focused on the day-to-day process of being a believer; he was passionate about the outcome of creating disciples. He preached with power and he taught God-inspired doctrine to people all over the world; but that was only part of his mission. He was a compassionate shepherd that loved people. He spent time encouraging them and he had high expectations of them and what they could accomplish in the name of the Lord. We need to aim not only to behave like disciples but to actually grow in our sanctification and to bring the lost to the throne of the Lord. Paul’s longest and most fruitful ministry was in Ephesus. His ministry out of the Hall of Tyrannus resulted in churches being started all through the region. Ephesus became the first regional hub for the gospel in the gentile world. That said, Ephesus was also one of the most spiritually dark cities in the entirety of the Roman empire. In our text today, we see the danger trusting in a second-hand faith. We also see an example of radical repentance as the gospel permeates a region and a city. The Kingdom of God is not a matter of simple words, but rather, of life changing power. In our passage, we first see the impact of authentic, God-given power. Then we see, the desire for counterfeit power that is apart from God. Lastly, we see how the impacts created by Gods power often lead to persecution and tribulation. As followers of Jesus, we must ensure that we are, indeed, powerful, but only because we are close to the Lord. His power is not present to complete our desires. No!
