Tuesday night Woodland was named Church of the Year by Care Portal at their national conference in Kansas City. Woodland's Child of God Bed Ministry partners with Care Portal to provide beds to children who need them in Bexar County. Joel Kirn was there to accept the award on our behalf. We are hearing from our local Care Portal connections that this award usually goes to megachurches in large metropolitan areas. So this was quite a pleasant surprise. We are grateful to partner with Care Portal and thank them for this honor.
Michael Casas (Care Portal Director in Bexar County) said this when announcing the award:
Woodland Church has become one of the most trusted CarePortal churches in Bexar County, ensuring children have something many of us take for granted: a safe place to sleep.
They show up again and again, often within days, to meet one of the most critical needs in our region.
But they do way more than just provide beds.
When a grandfather had to step up for his grandkids after a tragedy struck their family, they made sure those kids weren’t sleeping on the floor anymore.
They also helped a young aunt take in her niece, keeping her with family instead of going into foster care.
Over and over, Woodland steps up, bringing back dignity, stability, and hope.
Thanks to their constant “yes,” kids are staying with family, siblings are sticking together, and homes are becoming places of safety.
Woodland isn’t just meeting needs; they’re changing what’s possible for families in crisis.
