Come celebrate the Feast of the Ascension with Choral Evensong followed by Holy Eucharist.
Thursday, May 14 at 7pm.
Music includes an introit with words by King Henry VI and an anthem with words by King Henry VIII.
The Preces and Responses are set by Joanna Forbes-L’Estrange. Psalm 47 is sung to an Anglican chant by Margaret Burk.
The canticles are by Roland Martin, written for St. Paul’s Cathedral, Buffalo, NY, about 20 years ago. Of the canticles, Dale Adelmann (who commissioned then in Buffalo and is now Canon for Music at St. Philip’s Cathedral in Atlanta) writes:
“The Magnificat and Nunc dimittis of Roland Martin’s St. Paul’s Cathedral, Buffalo, in D service develop as an integrated single movement despite their liturgical separation. The canticles’ melodies emphasize God’s mercy through salvation as they evolve and transform over the music’s course. Mercy is here a theme of necessary and appropriate emphasis for this service born out of tragedy. It was commissioned in memory of Linda Collens Wilson, who worked tirelessly with disadvantaged youth. She was murdered by a young and troubled neighbor. In response to this act of violence, Linda’s husband Robert formed the nonprofit EPIC in order to help children escape cycles of violence and neglect. We might hear Martin’s evening service…as a musical reflection of the mercy EPIC seeks to infuse into the communities it serves.”
