Faith and Endurance

2 Kings 7:3-9 NIV
The Siege Lifted
3 Now there were four men with leprosy [a] at the entrance of the city gate. They said to each other, “Why
stay here until we die? 4 If we say, ‘We’ll go into the city’- the famine is there, and we will die. And if we
stay here, we will die. So let’s go over to the camp of the Arameans and surrender. If they spare us, we
live; if they kill us, then we die.”
5 At dusk they got up and went to the camp of the Arameans. When they reached the edge of the camp,
no one was there, 6 for the Lord had caused the Arameans to hear the sound of chariots and horses and a
great army, so that they said to one another, “Look, the king of Israel has hired the Hittite and Egyptian
kings to attack us!” 7 So they got up and fled in the dusk and abandoned their tents and their horses and
donkeys. They left the camp as it was and ran for their lives.
8 The men who had leprosy reached the edge of the camp, entered one of the tents and ate and drank.
Then they took silver, gold and clothes, and went off and hid them. They returned and entered another
tent, took some things from it, and hid them also.
9 Then they said to each other, “What we’re doing is not right. This is a day of good news and we are
keeping it to ourselves. If we wait until daylight, punishment will overtake us. Let’s go at once and report
this to the royal palace.”

Jesus Calls His First Disciples
5 One day as Jesus was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret, [a] the people were crowding around him and
listening to the word of God. 2 He saw at the water’s edge two boats, left there by the fishermen, who were
washing their nets. 3 He got into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon, and asked him to put out a
little from shore. Then he sat down and taught the people from the boat. 4 When he had finished speaking,
he said to Simon, “Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch.”
5 Simon answered, “Master, we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything. But because you
say so, I will let down the nets.” 6 When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that
their nets began to break. 7 So they signaled their partners in the other boat to come and help them, and
they came and filled both boats so full that they began to sink.
8 When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus’ knees and said, “Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful
man!” 9 For he and all his companions were astonished at the catch of fish they had taken, 10 and so were
James and John, the sons of Zebedee, Simon’s partners.
Then Jesus said to Simon, “Don’t be afraid; from now on you will fish for people.” 11 So they pulled their
boats up on shore, left everything and followed him.
