One of the greatest but most overlooked phrases in the book of Proverbs is this! The Bible states in Proverbs 25:1, “These are also proverbs of Solomon, which the men of Hezekiah king of Judah copied out.”
Containing just four words, this phrase helps introduce this entire chapter. The wonderful phrase to which I’m referring is “the men of Hezekiah”. With careful thought and study, we find how significant these men were. These men were not Bible authors but Bible followers and Bible preservers. Their example is often overlooked and unreported but it is important nonetheless. According to Jewish history, they helped compile and preserve the books of Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Song of Solomon, and Isaiah. These men would have remained faithful to God during the reign of wicked king Ahaz, Hezekiah’s father. When they could have turned aside and followed king Ahaz into idolatry, they chose to obey and follow the King of kings. Oh that America had more men like this! Oh that churches had more men like this! Someone recently asked, “Is there anything more important than diversity?” How about character? How about having a love for God and the Bible? How about having a strong work ethic? How about being dependable? How about not following the crowd when it’s convenient? How about standing up for what is right and decent? These men possessed all of these qualities and more! There’s so much that could be written about these men once you know the history of when and where they lived. May the Lord give America more men like “the men of Hezekiah”. Amen!
