Make disciples. Baptize. Teach. Remember. Famous last words of Jesus. Why am I here? What is my purpose? Why do we come to church? With everything going on in our world today, maybe we need to ask ourselves these questions again. Are we living in light of those last words of Jesus Christ?

Christianity is always personal, but never individual. We each have our own purpose to fulfill, but God calls us to live together, work together and worship together in community. I cannot wait to worship together, at a distance tomorrow, on Pentecost Sunday. Bring your flame..or be prepared to be ignited!

This Holy Week really brings with it the weight of things gone wrong.

We can't gather in our Sunday best.

Kids can't gather and hunt eggs in the lawn.

The fragrance of Easter lilies in the sanctuary will go unsmelled.

We definitely feel grief over loss.

But maybe the change in venue and the stripping away of the familiar will bring new understanding.

The Silence of Saturday
by Max Lucado

Jesus is silent on Saturday. The women have anointed his body and placed it in Joseph’s tomb. The cadaver of Christ is as mute as the stone which guards it. He spoke much on Friday. He will liberate the slaves of death on Sunday. But on Saturday, Jesus is silent.

So is God. He made himself heard on Friday. He tore the curtains of the temple, opened the graves of the dead, rocked the earth, blocked the sun of the sky, and sacrificed the Son of Heaven. Earth heard much of God on Friday.

Nothing on Saturday. Jesus is silent. God is silent. Saturday is silent.

Easter weekend discussions tend to skip Saturday. Friday and Sunday get the press. The crucifixion and resurrection command our thoughts. But don’t ignore Saturday. You have them, too.

Silent Saturdays. The day between the struggle and the solution; the question and the answer; the offered prayer and the answer thereof.

Saturday’s silence torments us. Is God angry? Did I disappoint him? God knows Jesus is in the tomb, why doesn’t He do something? Or, in your case God knows your career is in the tank, your finances are in the pit, your marriage is in a mess. Why doesn’t He act? What are you supposed to do until He does?

You do what Jesus did. Lie still. Stay silent. Trust God. Jesus died with this conviction: “You will not abandon me to the grave, nor will you let your Holy One see decay” (Acts 2:27 NIV).

Jesus knew God would not leave him alone in the grave. You need to know, God will not leave you alone with your struggles. His silence is not his absence, inactivity is never apathy. Saturdays have their purpose. They let us feel the full force of God’s strength. Had God raised Jesus fifteen minutes after the death of His son, would we have appreciated the act? Were He to solve your problems the second they appear, would you appreciate His strength?

For His reasons, God inserts a Saturday between our Fridays and Sundays. If today is one for you, be patient. As one who endured the silent Saturday wrote: “Be patient, brethren, until the coming of the Lord” (James 5:7 NKJV).

Today is Saturday, but Sunday is coming!

The triumph of Palm Sunday is not the donkey, the hosannas, or the palms. It is in Christ’s earth shaking entry into our world and our lives.

When we truly allow Jesus to ride into the turmoil in our heart we are shaken. Just like the city of Jerusalem, our foundation has been tested. Our old way of thinking, seeing, and acting crumbles and falls.

The structures we have built our lives on no longer imprison us. Somewhere in each of our lives we need the triumphant turmoil of Christ.

His devastation creates space and a place for a new foundation, a new structure, and a new life.

The turmoil Jesus brings is the chaos out of which new life will be born on Easter Sunday.

"Can these bones live?"
No matter how spiritually dry we may feel, God revitalizes our lives and our church.
The evidence is clear. Even during this time of "quarentine" I see people taking care of each other. People going deeper into their relationship with Christ. I see the love and concern that you show for each other. I see you showing up to make sure needs are met for the community of Grape Creek.

The Spirit of God is alive and well at Grape Creek UMC.

Do you feel God breathing life into our church? Into you?

As we stand in our own "valley of dry bones" we can and will see the miracle of new life in the days ahead.

So take a deep breath. Be filled. Be restored. Be revived.

Grape Creek UMC
Dear Church Family,

It has come to my attention that meetings, including worship services, should be 10 or less.

Anything more than that needs to be cancelled as a means of helping to prevent the spread of COVID-19 (Coronavirus).

In light of this news, I believe it is best for us to cancel all worship services until we can get a better handle on this situation.

I will miss being together with you for our worship services.

I will be sending Lectionary readings and other study materials via email and posting here, to our church page.

I would ask you to send me your prayer concerns via email or text and I will put them together on an email to all our church recipients.

I will put together a study and/or sermon for each Sunday that we do not meet in order to help keep us walking together.

We will re-evaluate this after the two week period has expired and see if we need to extend this time or be able to begin meeting together in April.

I will do my best to keep everyone informed.

An email has been sent out. If you are not on the email list and would like to be added please comment or send me a message and I will gladly add you!

You are loved,

Pastor Lori

Nicodemus "came to Jesus by night". We don't really know why, but maybe like the fishermen, he had fished all night and his nets still came up empty.

There are times in life when daytime questions keep us up at night.

What might look like a simple question, could require an answer that can only been seen with our spiritual eyes.

The story of Adam and Eve has always brought about much debate.

What went wrong in the garden?

The key is in the words of the serpent. "Eat the fruit, you will be like God."

I have questions!! Let's get answers!

Change is inevitable. Good or bad. Expected or unexpected.

Listen to him! Be raised up! Do not be afraid!

What if those words are the means by which we step into our own transfiguration?

Maybe it wasn't Jesus who changed on the mountaintop.

Sometimes it takes distance and perspective to see the change of a miracle of God's making.

Salt and light. Both penetrating....both have influence...both describing our identity in Jesus Christ. You are the salt of the earth. You are the light of the world. So what do we get when we add salt + light? What does it equal? How do we begin to be salt and light? The part of the equation that is missing is the law. When we add the law, not our misconstrued version of the law, but the law as Jesus saw it we get the answer.
Are you following all the rules? Going through the checklist of being a good Christian while your heart is still far from him? Are you still trying to be good enough? Is the Holy Spirit creating in you a delight for His law? Where can you be salt and light this week? Join us this Sunday and be shaken!
