DAY 8 Evening - Pastor Weston

1 Corinthians 16:13-14 (ESV) “Be watchful, stand firm in the faith, act like
men, be strong. Let all that you do be done in love.”

When I read this passage, it reminds me that not just as a man, but as a father and husband that I need to be one that never waivers on what I believe in. When I say that I DO NOT mean that I need to be so set in my ways that I cannot be corrected, or that the Lord cannot show me something new. What I do mean is that nothing in this world can change my mind or my faith in the Lord. My faith is set firmly on the foundation of what Jesus did and does for me on a daily basis!

The enemy would love nothing more than to get all the men confused and standing on loose ground. When that happens the enemy has free rein to ruin so many precious things. The ramifications of this kind of "man" last for generations. As men we are to stand on faith and help those around us. This is why he adds the “be watchful” part. It would make no sense to be watchful and do nothing when signs of struggle are in those around you.

Both of these verses are calls to action. They tell us to watch and be ready standing in the strength the Lord provides. They also tell us how to act when we do need to move and help. Verse 14 is very specific that when it comes to helping and leading our actions MUST be rooted in love.

Everything being done in love
is how we show Jesus's true heart to those around us.

Prayer: Father, we ask that as we are going through life we stay rooted and standing firmly on your word. Give us your faith to never move from your ways and the road you have us on. Father, we ask you to give us your eyes to be watchful of those around us. We ask for wisdom on when and how to respond in your true love. We thank you for your peace and strength. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Day 8 Morning
“Do you want to be healed?”- Colton Ernst

In John chapter 5, we encounter a man who the scriptures call an “invalid.” Simply put, this man was disabled. For years, he spent day in and day out laying by the pool called Bethesda. In fact, he wasn’t the only one doing this, the scriptures recount that many sick and disabled people were spending their lives around this pool. The reason they did this is revealed after Jesus asks the man a question. The man responds “Sir, I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up.” Evidently, (whether it was true or not) these people believed when the water of the pool was stirred that if they could just get to touch the water then they would be healed. They believed they would be delivered from what was holding them captive, and that freedom would be found from this pool.

In your life, is there anything in which you have placed your hope above Jesus? What are you hoping will bring you the freedom you have longed for? What avenues for deliverance have you sought when Jesus was standing in your midst?

Now let’s go back and look at the question that Jesus asks this man to illicit his response. In verse 6, Jesus walks up to this man who had been disabled for 38 years, and asked him. “Do you want to be healed?” Our knee jerk reaction is shock, maybe disbelief, even offense. How could Jesus ask him this? Of course he wants to be healed he has been disabled for decades! But Jesus, knowing full well the condition of the human heart, is asking you the same question. Do you want to be healed? Are you holding on to brokenness because it’s all you’ve known for so long? Have you found a sense of comfort in your brokenness because you know that walking into healing might involve some growing pains?

This man’s story doesn’t end with him laying down waiting for someone to put him into this pool. His story ends waking out of that place after embracing the healing that only Jesus can bring! I encourage you today. Don’t hang on to that broken area that Jesus wants to heal you from. Don’t place your hope in something that can’t deliver.

Prayer: Father, help me to put my faith, trust, and hope in you and you alone. Help me to release my grasp on anything that You want to free me from. I want to be healed. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Day 7 Evening
Delight yourself in the Lord - Kaitlyn Hickey

Psalm 37:4 “Delight yourself in the Lord, and He will give you the desires of your heart.”

When I first read this verse and for a long time after, I always thought that it was saying God will give me everything my heart desires. Upon studying deeper in the scripture I found that it isn’t saying that at all. Your heart can be selfish and fleeting. Desiring things that are only for yourself and things that won’t last.

Jeremiah 17:9 says that “our hearts are deceitful above all things.” So why would you trust what your own heart desires? You cannot trust in your heart alone. We need the Lord to help guide us and change us. While you cannot trust your own desires you can trust God’s perfect desires for your life. His desires for your life can only bring you joy. When you truly delight in the Lord you will find your heart and desires changed, aligning with God’s good desires for your life. If he is your delight, He gives you more of Himself.

He is the treasure of which you are constantly seeking. To delight yourself in the Lord is to find true peace and fulfillment in Him! It is an invitation for you to draw closer to Him. Delighting yourself in Him is the key to a happy and satisfied life.

Prayer: Lord, teach me to desire what you desire for my life. I thank you that by delighting myself in you I am completely satisfied. With you I lack nothing. I thank you that right now you are aligning my heart with your perfect desires. In Jesus’ name, Amen!

Day 7 Morning
GROW THROUGH WHAT YOU GO THROUGH - Sherry Swanson

Self-Control is not a bad thing, but oh how I dread having to prune this fruit of the Spirit in my life. Do you get a twinge of dread and mutter, ”ughh” and then sigh… when faced with what you need to do, but don’t want to? We might not say “Oh Holy Spirit, I-Do-Not-Want-To-Do-This, but that is exactly what we are doing. He responds so lovingly, “Oh my precious child, don’t you want to grow?” The problem for me is that (as usual) I am trying to force the growth of this fruit on my own. I want it when the circumstances are “right” or when I am ready.

We need to remember we cannot grow this fruit just by trying harder. This is a product of God the Holy Spirit working inside each of us. Whenever we are tempted (drawn away by our own desires) we must remember we are a branch that must stay attached to the Vine to live. Jesus said in John 15:5 "I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing." Acts 17:28 "For in him we live and move and have our being."

Let’s talk about pruning now. Ouch, do we have to? This is not so much fun because it means I must check my own desires at the door. (Hey, you’re pruned if you do and you’re pruned if you don’t, so work with the Holy Spirit to help us.) He is the one who does the work in our lives when we allow Him. I was reading a comment in my Bible, the fruit that the Heavenly Vinedresser looks for in His people is Christlikeness. For a branch to be productive, it must submit to pruning (that is the loving discipline of God the Father.) It must maintain an abiding union with the Vine. As you are participating in this time of fasting, in whatever way you have chosen, remember that growth requires letting go of bad habits, allowing Holy Spirit to help us remove unhealthy actions and receive His daily nourishment.

Galatians 5:22-23 states: "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance [patience], kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law."

Love: Caring deeply for others without conditions.
Joy: A deep, steady gladness from God.
Peace: Calmness in your heart and mind.
Patience: Being slow to anger and waiting well.
Kindness: Doing good to help others.
Goodness: Living a pure and virtuous life.
Faithfulness: Staying loyal and true to God.
Gentleness: Showing humility and a soft spirit.
Self-Control: Managing your own actions and desires

Prayer: Heavenly Father, as we continue in this 7-day fast, we invite Your Holy Spirit to work in our lives. Help us to grow this fruit. Produce in me the fruit of self-control, strengthening me to resist temptation, quiet my impulses, and honor You in my daily choices.

Day 6 Evening
WHAT?!.... ATTENTION. - Rusty Swanson

We have all laughed at the expression…”We were so poor we couldn’t pay attention.” Actually, paying attention is so important and very needed for so many reasons. Like noticing the stop sign, lining up in the right line at the grocery store (only 10 items at this register). How about this one…going out the in-door…. WHAT?

You get the idea. I have always said, “paying attention is very essential.” I even have a sign at Roosters that says, “The difference between a mediocre restaurant and an excellent one is attention to detail.” Paying attention to the small things matter. In fact, it is more important to me that people are paying attention rather than following all the rules (especially while driving). Paying attention helps us to notice what we might not have, or see what we would not have, or hear what we would not have. Paying attention allows us to connect with the things around us, the people we live with, and so much more.

My grandson and I have an ongoing joke and connection in just looking at each other and saying, “what!” You are probably wondering, “what?” About a year ago, I looked at Brendan and said, “I’m going to call you ‘What.”’ He blinked and said, “Why would you do that?” I told him that almost every time I tell you something or ask you something, you say, “What?” It was almost always because his mind was thinking at a different level, not really paying attention to me or our conversation. It wasn’t out of disrespect, lack of love, or even not caring. He was simply focused elsewhere. I know I am guilty of this also. Now, we look at each other and just say, “What?!” and begin laughing.

How do we bring our attention into focus and be more aware and receptive? In the military there is a way the troops, unit or squadron are put into a ready position to receive instruction. They line up and the one in charge says” ATTENTION!” This makes everyone alert and focused on the one who is addressing them. Right now, you are putting yourself into a position mentally, physically, and spiritually to focus on the One we are seeking instruction from. You have arranged your time, your plans, and your meals. You have
assembled your Bible, notepad, pencils, and more to be ready to receive what the Lord has to say.

YOU HAVE BROUGHT YOURSELF TO ATTENTION!
1 Samuel 3:10 – “Speak Lord, that I might hear WHAT You have to say.”

Prayer: Help me Lord as I seek you during this time. Help me to hear Your voice and to receive your instruction. I give You all my attention. In Jesus’ name. Amen

Day 6 Morning
Rend Your Heart- Austin Colvin

In the book of Joel, God’s people have just undergone disaster: “The grain offering and the drink offering are cut off from the house of the Lord. The priests mourn, the ministers of the Lord. The fields are destroyed, the ground mourns, because the grain is destroyed, the w**e dries up, the oil languishes.” Joel 1:9-10 English Standard Version

Due to this disaster, the ministers of the Lord are no longer able to perform their typical duties in the temple and their offering is withheld. In verse 13 and 14 of chapter 1, the Lord calls his people to consecrate a fast with all the inhabitants or the land to cry out to the Lord. In the midst of what seems hopeless, what looks broken, God simply asks for His people to seek Him.

Joel 2:12-13 says, “‘Yet even now,’ declares the Lord, ‘return to me with all your heart, with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning; and rend your hearts and not your garments.’ Return to the Lord your God, for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love; and he relents over disaster.” God knows the turmoil His people have undergone and instructs them with both physical actions to do, and more importantly: a direction of heart to take.

He calls them to repent, to turn, to undergo a change of mind. He wants your heart, not your garments. He wants to transform your heart as you return to Him and behold Him (2 Corinthians 3:18). Letting God transform your heart will naturally transform your actions. It will naturally help you love your neighbor. It will naturally make you a more generous person and naturally make you more into His image.
Acts 3:19-20 says, “Repent therefore, and turn back, that your sins may be blotted out, that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord, and that he may send the Christ appointed for you, Jesus.” God wants to refresh you, but He starts with your heart.

Prayer: Thank you Father for this time of fasting. I repent of my sin and want to seek your face. May I present my entire heart to you, that you may transform it, in Jesus’ name, Amen.
