When so many obligations demand our attention, we might avoid engaging with neighbors. But love for God and love for neighbor go hand in hand.

THE FOOLISHNESS OF PREACHING

I have heard it repeatedly over the years.

“If preaching will win the world for Christ the world would have been won to Christ by now.”

This was a sentiment by some pastors I know.

There was a time when “preaching” meant the delivery of a sermon, and sermon was the delivery of God’s Word, the Bible. Today, “preaching” and “sermon” simply mean giving a religious talk.

But pastors should know better. For the Bible tells us,

“For since in the wisdom of God the world by its wisdom did not know God, God was pleased to save those who believe by the foolishness of preaching” (1 Corinthians 1:21).

I love Eugene Peterson’s take on this in the Message:

“Since the world in all its fancy wisdom never had a clue when it came to knowing God, God in his wisdom took delight in using what the world considered stupid—preaching, of all things!—to bring those who trust him into the way of salvation.”

Paul charged Timothy before he was executed:

“Preach the word!” (2 Timothy 4:2).

The word. The Bible. Not a book you read. Not a movie you saw. Not a television show you enjoyed. Not an experience you had.

Preach the word.

The Bible is God's revelation of who he is and his plan of redeeming man through Jesus Christ.

Someone asked me years ago if I was out of sermons by then. I can live my life a hundred times over and never exhaust the riches of God's word.

The Lord Jesus said,

“And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come” (Matthew 24:14)
