First Baptist Church of Salt Lake City

First Baptist Church of Salt Lake City First Baptist Church is a progressive American Baptist Church in the heart of Salt lake City. Our services are at 11:00 am on Sunday. Baptist?

First Baptist Church of Salt Lake City;
Not what you expect, but maybe what you are looking for. We know that when we say “Baptist” it conjures up many different images of what that means. So what kind of Baptist are we? We are Baptists who worship an inclusive Christ; we invite all people, regardless of color, gender, sexual orientation, or station in life, to be on their journey of faith, explor

ing what it means to follow Christ together. We deliberately work to make room for many different perspectives and life experiences; young and old, different cultures, different faith experiences, all coming together and sharing the richness of our faith with one another. We are Baptists who are less concerned with doctrinal statements and more concerned with seeking the wisdom of scripture, tradition and our own faith experiences in making sense of our lives today and counting on the Holy Spirit to reveal it to us. We are Baptists who, whether you are a believer, a seeker or a doubter, invite you to develop and foster your faith in an environment that is encouraging and safe. We are Baptists who see faith not as something we have, but as something we do; who love beyond our congregation to the community and the world, not to manipulate people into becoming one of us, but to do good for the sake of doing good and contributing to the world. We are Baptists who don’t claim to be the only way to be in relationship with God, but focus on the life and teachings of Jesus Christ, seeing Christ as the lens through which we make sense of the world and God’s activity in it. We are Baptists who are an inclusive, progressive voice in Salt Lake City, building on over a century of faithful witness as we seek to be relevant today. We invite you to explore further and get to know us through this website or in person at any of our programs. There are opportunities for all ages to grow, learn and serve. Please join us for worship on Sundays, at 11:00 a.m. If you have any questions or would like to hear more about the church, please give us a call at 801-582-4921. Grace and Peace,
Pastor Curtis

On the Sunday before St. Patrick’s Day the choir sang a great Irish hymn, "Be Thou My Vision". This hymn finds its roots in an ancient 6th-century monastic poem, "Rop tú mo Baile". It was translated into English in 1905 by Mary Elizabeth Byrne and later versified by Eleanor Hull in 1912. The hymn is set to "Slane," a traditional Irish melody. It is a beautiful song that expresses a deep desire to focus one’s life and being on God. Enjoy.

The Christian church has a lot to make up for in this regard. First Baptist is committed to doing what we can to repent of the sins of the past and be the safe and affirming place the church should always be.

It is Women's History Month. The American Baptist Historical Society highlight Helen Barrett Montgomery.

ABHS celebrates Women's History Month
Helen Barrett Montgomery was born on July 31, 1861 in Kingsville, OH. She is known as an educator and writer, but was also a social reformer.
In 1921 she was the first woman to be elected president of the Northern Baptist Convention, and the first of any religious denomination in the U.S. Before that, in 1899, she had been the first woman elected to the Rochester (NY) School Board, the first elected to any public office in that city. This was 20 years before women had the vote.
Montgomery was also a scholar, translating the New Testament from the original Greek, the first woman to do so. ABHS has many records related to Montgomery’s life and work.

Having children in worship is a tremendous blessing and we at First Baptist Church value being in a multi generation setting. So, children are welcome to stay in the service and are encouraged to be a part of everything we do. Of course, there is a nursery for infants and preschoolers up through 4 years old. There are activity bags at the entrance of the sanctuary for children while in worship. We have a program for Elementary age children we call Praise Club.

It is important to know that in our children's program, we do not seek to indoctrinate children, rather our curriculum and teaching encourages children to develop a faith of their own. Please join us at 11 am on Sunday.

Ask questions. Disagree. Wonder out loud. Change your mind. Be comfortable with, "I don't know"–it's your faith journey. If you are tired of being told what to believe and being discouraged from questioning, then First Baptist Church is the place for you. It is a pillar of Baptist thought and tradition that every individual is free to discern and articulate their faith on their own terms. As we do this together in community, we are all stronger for it. That's what church is about. Please join us 11:00 am on Sunday.
