Prior to the organization of the stake officially, President Brigham Young met with many of the pioneer companies in the Great Salt Lake Valley. At this meeting, Elder John Smith was appointed by President Young and members of the Council of the Twelve with him to preside over the Saints in the Valley. The Salt Lake Stake was organized o

n October 3, 1847 and is the oldest continuous stake in the Church. When the stake was first organized, it included the entire Church within the valleys of the mountains (the Oquirrh and Wasatch Mountain ranges). In 1997, the stake’s 150th anniversary, there were 286 stakes in the Utah North Area; most of these were divisions or subdivisions of the Salt Lake Stake. There are nine units (six wards and three branches) that comprise the current stake organization including Russian and Spanish branches and a branch of Family History Service Missionaries. Annual and semi-annual stake conferences are held in the Assembly Hall on Temple Square, which is within the stake boundaries. From John Smith (the Prophet Joseph Smith’s uncle and first patriarch of the Church in the Salt Lake Valley) to Stan Fitts, the stake’s current president, there have been seventeen men who have served as president over this historical stake. Counselors to President Fitts are Walter Baker and Mike Hussey.
