The Progressive Clergy Coalition of Utah, a coalition of faith leaders representing diverse religious traditions in the state of Utah, unequivocally voices opposition to the proposed Immigration and Customs Enforcement mega-detention Center at 6020 West 300 South in Salt Lake City. We oppose any facility whose sole purpose is the inhumane, cruel and unjust treatment of our immigrant, or any, neighbors. Such a facility tramples the civil and human rights of people residing in Utah and the United States, as well as egregiously violating of our social contract and shared humanity.
In 2010, business, government and faith leaders throughout Utah agreed on the common sense and ethical premise that immigrants are our beloved neighbors, friends and family worthy of protection, through the Utah Compact. It’s affirmation a mere seven years ago is a testament that the values we espouse as Utahns of every religious or non-religious tradition are not up for debate or compromise. The values of diversity, pluralism, inclusion, belonging, mercy, compassion and justice are held throughout time and are core in all the prominent global faith traditions.
Living out these values has always been fraught and tenuous, and we as faith leaders believe that they are foundational and necessary for vibrant communities in Utah. We exercise hope, not based on wishful thinking, but hope built on the arduous and fruitful work of sitting down face to face, beloved human to beloved human to see ourselves in one another. Hope that springs forth in neighbors breaking bread, sharing the bounty of gardens, wisdom and care. Faith communities have long been the bearers of such hope, creating a vision where inflicted hurt ceases, for acceptance, harmony and joy to abound.
We proclaim this hope not from naïveté, but with intention. Intention that reveals the false dichotomies offered by some people in leadership. We reject such thinking and voice the intention of our lives together: human flourishing for all people regardless of their paperwork status, job skills, color of their skin, whom they love or any other arbitrary category that diminishes innate divinity and worth. Intention to utter into reality the gifts of liberation, mercy and compassion for us all. Only by intentionally claiming our interconnectedness, that harm to one harms us all, can we all be free to thrive and prosper.
