Psalm 34:18: The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.

David was living proof of what he said. There were several times in David’s life when he experienced a broken heart and a contrite spirit. I am glad David reported that when our heart is broken and we feel that God is far away—He is indeed with us. We get so focused on our troubles that we don’t realize our Best Friend is beside us. But only faith will reveal Him. God will see us through when we feel like our lives have been hopelessly shattered.

One of the lesser known, and often overlooked proverbs is Prov. 28:26 “He that trusteth in his own heart is a fool: but whoso walketh wisely, he shall be delivered.”

None of us appreciates being called a “fool.” In fact, to be called a fool is an infuriating insult. Nevertheless, this small snippet from God’s Word, gives us profound counsel. If you do not want to be thought of as fool, you cannot—you must not—trust in your own heart. The word “trusteth” indicates that to which you go quickly for refuge. “Heart” deals with your human emotions, intellect, and will. The word “fool” is the person who is stubborn; rebellious, troublesome, annoying, disobedient, and quite often, uncontrollable. None of us want to think of ourselves as being this kind of “fool.” But another proverb reminds us: Prov. 23:7 “For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he!”
