This commentary is from a famous interview with Oprah Winfrey on the Where Are They Now? series.

During that broadcast, Raven-Symoné originally sparked massive internet backlash by declaring, "I'm tired of being labeled. I'm an American. I'm not an African-American; I'm an American."

She later clarified on her podcast, Tea Time With Raven & Miranda, and during an appearance on The Jason Lee Show, that her rejection of the label was not a denial of her Blackness.

She maintains that she is proudly a Black American. However, she reserves the term "African-American" for first- or second-generation immigrants who still hold direct cultural or physical ties to the African continent.
