As I look back on my years as an educator, today is a sobering reminder of the sinful nature of this ungodly world – but also the precious promise that God shall have the last Word. This morning, an article arrived in my INBOX that brought back a roaring remembrance of a painful incident in 2007.
On that fateful day, my principal walked into my classroom with a sorrowful smile on her face. I immediately became alarmed, though I did not know what it was about. Dr. Riley said, “Arlene, I have two pieces of news for you – one good and one sad. Which do you want first”? When I asked her to give me the good news first, she said, “You have been inducted again into this year’s volume of Who’s Who Among Teachers.” For those that may not know about this award, it is one given to an educator, from a former student, who proclaims her successful collegiate degrees were based largely upon the influence of one of his/her former teachers. I said – oh – thank you Dr. Riley – who was the student? She said, you remember Minal Patel? I said, “Yes, indeed – my Minal – Minal – as I used to call her. She said yes, she is the student that nominated you this time”. Then, I said, “Dr. Riley – well - what is the bad news”? She said, Arlene, she is one of the students at Virginia Tech that was killed yesterday by the gunman Seung Cho.
Of course, I was devastated – a student that, though believed in Hinduism, had the Spirit of Stephen in the book of Acts. Like Stephen, a very gentle nature who was a martyr – even in times like these.
I ask you today that, while you are praying in your solitude, would you please remember my little Minal – Minal – whose life was deleted out of the tactics of a vindictive, Satanic force – Minal - whose only sin – was to be at the wrong place at the wrong time. Also, if you would, please pray for me today – as Satan is once again – trying to steal my joy. Yet, I am leaning on the teachings of Paul as he advised the people of Galatia – stay grounded in your faith, knowing that you can’t have mountains without valleys – that life is sweeter, after you have tasted bitterness. Yes, even in today, as I reflect on the life of my Minal – Minal, I will still trust in the Lord. I mean this - PLEASE, PLEASE pray for me, as I continue to trod down this dusty road called LIFE. Please also, ask our God, in His omnipotent power and understanding, to consider my student – Minal.

Shalom to the believers – with love,
Arlene

I just saw a commercial on television of a talking dog who loved its owner adoringly for buying him Apoquel, a non-itching medication.
It reminded me of my family’s last dog, Pepper. Though he was a gift to me from a group of my students’ parents, it was obvious that it was Tonya that had Pepper’s heart.
Why? because Tonya spent endless hours with him - loving him - nurturing her relationship with him, convincing him that, no matter what, she could be counted on to be his friend. When she was growing up, with so much frolicking and laughter, Jim and I would think she had a human friend in her bedroom ... but no - it was just Tonya and Pepper.
That is similar to the relationship that God wants to have with us. He wants us to love Him, to trust Him (no matter what). He wants us to get to know Him, to understand why He loved us so much, that He was willing to die for us. How do we get it? Like Tonya to Pepper, by spending time with God. He’d love to hear you call him “ABBA” (Mark 14:36), the most intimate Father/child relationship one could ever hope for.
My friends, reserve some time every day to spend with God; He’s waiting to hear from you - He would like to be your very best friend. And ... how cool is that?
Prayer: Dear Father, we thank you for desiring a loving relationship us. Forgive us Lord for not taking the time to get to know you better. We promise, though, that we seek your presence in our lives ... and realize that the only way to do this is to spend precious time with thee. Thank you, Lord, for your love - even your grace. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

FAITH, IN SPITE OF
Luke 1:37 … “Nothing you see is impossible with God”

Above you will find a picture of one of my dearest friends – one of my friends of the Jewish faith – Suzanne Dukes. You may be wondering how I – an absolute follower of Jesus the Christ would call one a dear friend. It is because of who she is. For those of you that don’t know, I taught Science for the Gifted Student in Florida for many years. It is there that I met Suzanne, whose two profoundly brilliant daughters, Ariel and Jillian, were my students. Suzanne by all accounts is wealthy. Her husband is a renowned doctor in the Maitland/Winter Park area. She could spend her days in sustained wealth and luxury. Yet, where did this Jewish socialite/Mother spend her time? At the Boys and Girls Club in Eatonville, Md. (the oldest vibrant black town in the nation), mentoring, encouraging and loving African American and other students from deprived homes.
When I had the Student Government, I took her and about 60 students and parents to Harvard University. I wanted them to see what they could accomplish through hard work and faith. Though some of the parents were subtly surprised to see students of color attending Harvard – not Suzanne – she worked with them for many years. She knew that we are all capable of accomplishing much with faith and hard work. Consequently, that visit encouraged both of her daughters – Ariel first and then Jillian – to attend and graduate from this very prestigious school. Though both now have sterling careers, Suzanne is still doing what she does best – helping the helpless – encouraging the downhearted – loving the loveless.
Below is part of the last correspondence that I got from her:
How are you? How is your family? Do you like Maryland?
And once again, thank you for always being so supportive of my children! You truly had a wonderful impact on them. You are a unique and special person and I hope all is well.
I wish you the Merriest of Christmas and a very Happy and Healthy New Year!!
Suzanne
Merriest of CHRISTMAS? - that’s what she wrote. Yes, she and I have differing views of who the Messiah is – and no, I am not unique in any way - but there’s one thing that she and I can agree on – that is our belief that if you live for God – if you love in spite of – if you keep your faith in spite of – God WILL bless everything that you touch. As we continue to look at God’s world Across the Ferry – even during this pandemic, we still have people out there that are still living for God – in spite of.
Thank you, Suzanne, – and all of you that live for Him.
Shalom from Arlene —Across The Ferry

Living for Christ – Even Doing the Pandemic

Shalom – my friends and family –
I hope that God is blessing you and yours – even during these times.
I am constantly struck by how we, persons of the faith, respond when crisis or conflicts enter our lives.
I recently read about a pastor who asked persons to turn their stimulus checks over to the church. These are from people who do not know where their next paycheck is coming from – but this man of God wants them to give it to the church and then trust God to take care of their needs.
I also recently completed a course entitled, “Discovering Your Gifts” where the instructor said “caution” when asking people to do what you would not do yourselves. Would that pastor give his salary back during these trying times and trust God to take care of him, the teacher asked? No, he would not. Then – what is the correct response for us – Christ’s shepherds, ministers in times like these? How about asking your parishioners to give more to the community? Would that be the appropriate response – even during the pandemic?
One church in Pocomoke City is asking for Monday to be … paraphrase … GIVING MONDAY. The pastor beseechs each of us to continue to serve our community. What about the first responders? … I’m certain they could use our assistance. Can you take socks and undergarments to ECI or one of the neighboring prisons – According to the gospel of Matthew, we learn that “Jesus did not come to be served, but to serve and give His life … That’s Living for CHRIST – even doing the pandemic!
In that same vein; what about foregoing vengeance and ugliness to people that you have a vendetta against.? How many times have we thought that we were treated unjustly and could never truly “get over it”? What do we do? … create a way to “get back” at the person/s that we feel have wronged us? Look at Jesus’ relationship with Simon Peter? Though at the very time that Peter could have showed his love and loyalty to Jesus – what did he do? … he denied the Lord. BUT, more importantly, how did Jesus respond? He cast it aside and told Peter that IF he really loved Him, He would feed His sheep, shepherd them – love them.
Let us live for Christ – even in times like this. Keep your prayer line strong – love your enemies and your perceived enemies – look to God in prayer and holy living – to live for Him – even doing the pandemic. PRAISE GOD.

As Far as East is from West

PSALM 103:8-22 (NKJV)
'And God called the firmament Heaven. So, the evening and the morning were the second day. Then God said, “Let the waters under the heavens be gathered together into one place, and let the dry land appear”; and it was so. And God called the dry land Earth, and the gathering together of the waters He called Seas. And God saw that it was good. Then God said, “Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb that yields seed, and the fruit tree that yields fruit according to its kind, whose seed is in itself, on the earth”; and it was so. And the earth brought forth grass, the herb that yields seed according to its kind, and the tree that yields fruit, whose seed is in itself according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. So the evening and the morning were the third day. Then God said, “Let there be lights in the firmament of the heavens to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs and seasons, and for days and years; and let them be for lights in the firmament of the heavens to give light on the earth”; and it was so. Then God made two great lights: the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night. He made the stars also. God set them in the firmament of the heavens to give light on the earth, So the evening and the morning were the fourth day. and to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness. And God saw that it was good. Then God said, “Let the waters abound with an abundance of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the face of the firmament of the heavens.” So God created great sea creatures and every living thing that moves, with which the waters abounded, according to their kind, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. And God blessed them, saying, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth.”
When I was heading out Colorado to go to collage, I stopped to see a friend and his family! I live in the east coast region of the U.S. and they live in the mid-west. When I reach my destination, I stopped; however, if I kept traveling west, I’d eventually wind up back home in the east because there is no point where west ends and east begins. It’s not that way with north and south. If I journey north, eventually I’ll come to the North Pole and from there I’ll go south, no matter which way I move–that is, until I reach the South Pole and from there I’ll travel north again. North and south actually have starting and stopping points.
I have watched the sun come up and set in different ways and settings. I have seen it in the dessert of Africa and in the Ocean coming back from Somalia. Now I watch it raise and set here at the Upper Ferry on the Wicomico River.
It’s interesting, isn’t it, that God didn’t say He removed our sins as far as the north is from the south? That distance can be measured in miles and in time, and there is a definite point where that occurs. Instead, our loving Heavenly Father said that He placed our sins as far away as the east is from the west. That can never be measured! So, if we try to find our sins, we just keep going in circles, like a dog chasing his tail. Well never be able to grab them again. By His grace, they are gone.
While the consequences of my transgressions linger, the penalty, the guilt, and the shame no longer must haunt and torment us. We are free to live in the luxurious grace of the King of Kings who pardons and even sanctifies use when we turn from our sin, accept His mercy, and seek His face. How much better if we never sinned in the first place, but what a comfort to know that when we fail, we can turn to Him in humility and genuine repentance, and He will cast those sins away as far as the east is from the west. Praise God, that’s forgiveness! That’s freedom! That’s God’s marvelous mercy!
Thank You, Lord, for the fabulous gift of forgiveness and mercy that flows from Your love.

Blankety - Blank - Blank

Now that Resurrection Sunday is past, what thoughts come to mind? My thoughts are how the Lamb’s Book of Life would look like for my witness.
There will be many pages that depict my life. The first pages will be when I accepted Jesus Christ as my Savior. Then many, many blank pages. Then, if I fed the hungry, that will be there. If I visited the sick – ah!! I see where Jesus made note of that. Then …. There are many, many blank pages. When I helped someone in secret and did it just for the glory of God – not for me nor Man – ah – there it is. Praise God!!!!! Oh-oh – what just happened? Many, many more blank pages – whew – blankety – blank – blank. What does those blank pages mean? Those are all of my sins that Jesus nailed with Him on the cross.
Acts 3:19 says, “Repent therefore, and turn back, that your sins may be blotted out….
Hallelujah!!!!!
Jesus will judge my good works – He will judge my witness. But what about my sins? ….. where will they be?
Blankety-Blank Blank!!!!
Because of what He did on the cross? … My sins are blotted out forever.
Thank you Lord – for being a true friend – for loving me more than I could even love myself … thank you for what you did on the cross – for my sins are gone forever.
AMEN

God’s Love
John 13:1-17

I want to talk a little bit about Gods AGAPE Love. We seem to forget about it until time gets tough, like now. There are a lot of places in the bible where they needed that type of love. They Gods love but never even recognized it.
Here we are coming up on the Easter season. Agape love is present to me in the book of John. John 13: 1-9 demonstrates how Jesus sets the example on how this love is shown. He not only shows the way but does it in a way that a servant would have to do it, by washing the disciples feet.
My daughter told me when she was 17, on her 18th birthday she wanted a tattoo. I explained to her its just not for everyone. Tried to talk her out of it. Well she had her mind set on it. She had to graduate from school first because she could not walk if she had a tattoo across the stage in a Christian school. Well the day came. We went to the tattoo parlor. She already knew what she wanted. It was the word AGAPA. Guess where she wanted it to put. On her foot. I could only think about the love of that Jesus did that day in the Upper Room with his disciples. When I see her foot sometimes, I think of the love He has given and the love He will give for me even more to this day. So, as you read this passage, just remember that you are one of the people in the story. You are one of the people He died for on the cross. You are one of the people, He wants to see in Heaven. You are one the ones, He wants to see at the Banquet.

Jesus Washes His Disciples’ Feet

It was just before the Passover Festival. Jesus knew that the hour had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end.
The evening meal was in progress, and the devil had already prompted Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, to betray Jesus. Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God; so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him.
He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, “Lord, are you going to wash my feet?”
Jesus replied, “You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand.”
“No,” said Peter, “you shall never wash my feet.”
Jesus answered, “Unless I wash you, you have no part with me.”
“Then, Lord,” Simon Peter replied, “not just my feet but my hands and my head as well!”
Jesus answered, “Those who have had a bath need only to wash their feet; their whole body is clean. And you are clean, though not every one of you.”For he knew who was going to betray him, and that was why he said not every one was clean.
When he had finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes and returned to his place. “Do you understand what I have done for you?”he asked them. “You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and rightly so, for that is what I am. Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. Very truly I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.
