We think fear, anger, divine intimidation, threat, and punishment are going to lead people to love. We cannot lead people to the highest level of motivation by teaching them the lowest. God always and forever models the highest, and our task is merely to “imitate God.”

No hatred, no violence No starvation and no greed
And no kings no kings No kings
No lies and no bullets No bombs and no need
For kings no kings No kings

No walls and no judgements No oppression cowering
To kings no kings No kings
Every color every culture Every language every creed
But no kings no kings No kings

No more dying in the clutches No more dying underneath
No kings no kings No kings
No more dying for the causes No one asked for no one needs
And no kings no kings No kings

To all the dignity and love that they deserve and need
No kings no kings No kings
The pursuit of happiness the right to life and liberty
And No kings no kings No kings

No child going hungry For there’s plenty enough to eat
But No kings no kings No kings
May I recognize your soul that you may see the soul in me
No kings no kings No kings

Close your eyes and listen so that you may truly see
No kings no kings No kings
That the killing of my foe Indeed destroys a part of me
No kings no kings No kings

No hatred, no violence No starvation and no greed
And no kings no kings No kings

The power to transform the violence our world suffers will not ultimately result from political decisions made by the powers that be. The new healing energy will come from the the interpersonal connections that music allows.

“Life is meant to be lived from a Center, a divine Center… a life of unhurried peace and power. It is simple. It is serene. It takes no time, but it occupies all our time.”
Thomas R. Kelly, Testament of Devotion, 1941

Perfection is not the elimination of imperfection, as we think. Divine perfection is, in fact, the ability to recognize, forgive, and include imperfection!—just as God does with all of us.

A Blessing for Our Anger

Thank you, Brian McLaren, from the Center for Action and Contemplation in Albuquerque, NM, for offering this prayer of blessing, as we seek to learn from the wisdom our anger has to teach us:

May you be blessed to see in your anger, not just a danger, but an opportunity. May you be blessed to see in your anger a window into what you love. May you be blessed to see in your anger a pathway into sadness. And may your sadness sweeten your anger until it is transformed into the energy of love.
May you come to see indifference, complacency, apathy, and self-centeredness within you as signs—not of your lack of anger, but of your lack of love.
May you welcome anger as a source of information about what you love, about what needs protection and repair, and about the courage and strength needed to make this world a more joyful and peaceful place.
May your anger lead you to sadness, and may your sadness lead you to love, so that you meet the tears of things with a heart of bottomless compassion.
May you be angry about what deserves anger, and may you experience such a transformation of your own anger that you become an agent of loving transformation in our world.
May the deep wisdom of God guide you deep into your anger so that you may join with Jesus in weeping for the world, and so that you groan with the creative Spirit in the loving labor pains of a better tomorrow.

This quote from the new Pope gives me hope. Especially when he says that God doesn't shout: God whispers. We Quakers listen for the still small voice within, by tuning out outer distortions and noise....

" Brothers, sisters…
I speak to you, especially to those who no longer believe, no longer hope, no longer pray, because they think God has left.
To those who are fed up with scandals, with misused power, with the silence of a Church that sometimes seems more like a palace than a home.
I, too, was angry with God.
I, too, saw good people die, children suffer, grandparents cry without medicine.
And yes… there were days when I prayed and only felt an echo.
But then I discovered something:
God doesn't shout. God whispers.
And sometimes He whispers from the mud, from pain, from a grandmother who feeds you without having anything.
I don't come to offer you perfect faith.
I come to tell you that faith is a walk with stones, puddles, and unexpected hugs.
I'm not asking you to believe in everything.
I'm asking you not to close the door. Give a chance to the God who waits for you without judgment.
I'm just a priest who saw God in the smile of a woman who lost her son... and yet she cooked for others.
That changed me.
So if you're broken, if you don't believe, if you're tired of the lies...
come anyway. With your anger, your doubt, your dirty backpack.
No one here will ask you for a VIP card.
Because this Church, as long as I breathe, will be a home for the homeless, and a rest for the weary.
God doesn't need soldiers.
He needs brothers.
And you, yes, you...
are one of them."
