Please note our "For The Love Of Trees - History and Nature in Greenlawn" event has been postponed until November 14th due to the Chapel restoration. We hope you are excited as we are to see the entire exterior of the Dickson Memorial Chapel restored. There will also be a ribbon cutting with Mayor Pangallo to celebrate the completion of the of the entire exterior restoration of the Dickson Memorial Chapel. Please save the date!

Water Still Not Available! Orne Street Closed to Traffic!

Some people are asking about access to water to water grave flowers etc. We have been told today by the cemetery office that they are working on it this week. Not sure exactly what that means for water access, but hopefully soon. There are notices posted at each gate along with the rules that share there is no water in Greenlawn.

FYI - Orne Street is getting grated and paved so it is closed to traffic. Not sure how long this will take.

For The Love of Trees VII – History and Nature in Greenlawn. Plus "Ribbon Cutting" celebrating the Dickson Memorial Chapel Exterior Restoration

Saturday - November 14th - 9:30AM-12:00PM

Come see a beautiful 55 acre rural cemetery and accredited arboretum in North Salem. This beautiful, historic cemetery, Greenlawn Cemetery and the accredited F. Carroll Sargent Arboretum have so much history, nature and beauty to share. We will have tree lovers and those that know Greenlawn well sharing special history, trees, and nature with guided strolls throughout Greenlawn. We will also view and share the history of the 1894 High Victorian Gothic Dickson Memorial Chapel along with any restoration updates.

Parking is free- Please park outside the cemetery in the neighborhood and walk in if you are able. We will meet at the Dickson Memorial Chapel. You will find the chapel behind the office just inside the 57 Orne Street side gate.

There is some walking of hills for some of the tours.

We will start with music at 9:30AM, brief introductions at 10AM and the tours will most likely begin at 10:30AM.

The sweet pepperbushes are in bloom along Sargent Pond! They smell so delightful!! There is always something nice in Salem's Greenlawn Cemetery and the F. Caroll Sargent Arboretum at Greenlawn Cemetery. Plus there is plenty of shade on these hot summer days.

Save the date and join us for tours of the history of Greenlawn, the Dickson Chapel and the neighborhood, plus nature and tree tours all with those that know it best. Saturday September 26th 9:30-12:00. We will meet at the Dickson Memorial Chapel. The entire exterior restoration should be completed by then too! Have you seen the inside of the chapel and the restored stained glass windows? Please join us. This event is free, but donations are welcome.

There is a Cemetery Commission Meeting on Tuesday August 11th @ 6PM via Zoom. They will be discussing the ADA access to the Dickson Memorial Chapel again. They will also be discussing the ponds. See the full agenda below.

Notice is hereby given that a meeting of the City of Salem Cemetery Commission will be held on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, at 6:00 p.m. The meeting will be accessible via remote participation in accordance with Chapter 2 of the Acts of 2025. Every effort will be made to ensure that the public can adequately access the proceedings in real time, via technological means.

It's been a hot couple of days! Remember there is plenty of shade for a stroll in Greenlawn Cemetery and the F. Carroll Sargent Arboretum at Greenlawn Cemetery. There are also 6 benches for some rest and refection. Enjoy your local greenery!

Please remember first and foremost this is an active cemetery. If you see or witness something illegal or concerning take action, pictures and send an email to the Cemetery Commission, Office and DPW. Do not post them here.

It's beauty of a day to enjoy a walk or stroll through Salem's historic, rural cemetery and accredited arboretum, Greenlawn Cemtery and the F. Caroll Sargent Arboretum.

Meeting & Events :

There is no Friends of Greenlawn meeting this month. We will meet next on August 25th. We meet the last Tuesday of every month unless otherwise notified.

Greenlawn Cemetery and the F. Carroll Sargent Arboretum at Greenlawn Cemetery have been getting some extra loving care and attention. Not only is the Dickson Memorial Chapel getting the entire exterior restored, but some of the broken gravestones are getting fixed and many new trees are being planted. Many thanks to all the staff and the new superintendent for all of their efforts.
