UKRAINIAN ORPHAN GIFTS: We have recently been provided with a list of needs and wants for 78 orphaned children who have been moved from Donetsk in Eastern Ukraine to the western area. The children are between the ages of 5 days old and 7 years old. They are traumatised and many will not speak. We hope to bring a smile to them. I have created a new Amazon Wish List for this cause. We hope to get a significant shipment out to them next week.

Orientale Lumen - Light from the East

Light from the East comes to the Catholic Church from her many eastern churches that are non-Roman. This usually comes as a surprise to many western Christians who style themselves “Roman Catholic”, but it can be a wake up call to those in the west who are not in touch with the universal Church. It was good Pope, St. John Paul II who sounded that call back in 1995 when he issued his monumental Apostolic Letter, Orientale Lumen, in May of that year.

This sense of the inexpressible divine reality is reflected in liturgical celebration, where the sense of mystery is so strongly felt by all the faithful of the Christian East. Orientale Lumen, I, paragraph 7

If you do consider yourself Roman Catholic, it really means that you were baptized into and follow the liturgical style, theological tradition and discipline of the rite in force at the Church of Rome. It also can mean that you are in union with that church. But there are millions of Catholics, in union with Rome, who follow a different liturgical style and discipline. Most of these Catholics, like their Eastern Orthodox brothers and sisters, live in the east. There are many who also live here in the west for a whole lot of social and political reasons. St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Church in Salem, MA prides herself in being in their midst.

If you are confused about all this, curious or just want to experience for yourself this refreshing Light from the East, visit us at 124 Bridge Street. Fr. Jim Morris and his kind, enthusiastic and warm congregation will try to explain it all and make you feel at home. As the excited Philip said to the skeptical Nathanael, “Come and see” (John 1. 43 - 46).
