First Church in Salem, Unitarian Universalist Welcome to the First Church in Salem! Universally Accessible and Universally Welcoming!

Wouldn't it be great if there were a church...
..that truly welcomes all people regardless of religious background, age, race or sexual orientation?
..that is grounded in a long and amazing history yet embraces current forms of inspiration and the cultivation of soul?
..that refuses to concede the Bible to mean-spirited and literal-minded interpretations and instead holds up the clarion c

alls for compassion and justice we hear in the scriptures?
..that encourages people to bring their whole selves to a service on Sundays and not simply check their brains at the door?
..with a long history of working for social change that actually speaks to the major issues of the day? Well, there is a church like this, and we invite you to come check out our services and programs.

Great news! Our tour guides and greeters slots are almost full for August. It looks as if we only have one or two spots left. The opportunities are as follows:
1. Box office computer person
2. Box office cash person
3. Inside the sanctuary guide, who stands near the pulpit
4. Sidewalk greeter (this person can choose to spend some time near the pulpit also).
You do NOT need to do any public speaking or learning about our history to be at the box office.
We have a lot of opportunities to be part of this project in September and October.
Get involved!

This Is Real—and It’s Working! Last year, historical tours at First Church in Salem brought in $20,000—with limited hours and a small but mighty group of volunteers. That’s a big win, and it shows just how much potential we have. As a historic church in one of the most visited cities in the ...

This Week: Lotus Blossoms and Muddy Waters: Buddhist Influences on Our Faith
Did you know that the first English translation of a Buddhist text was published by Elizabeth Palmer Peabody, a member of this church? This Sunday, we’ll explore the early Unitarian and Transcendentalist interest in Buddhism and how it can help us understand our pluralist faith today.

This Week: The Rituals That Bind Us with Rev. Danielle -
Our Unitarian ancestor, Norbert Čapek, was someone whose commitment to his faith and values resulted in his murder by the N***s. He was also someone whose faith was expansive, inventive, tender and playful enough to birth a new ritual: Flower Communion. Let’s celebrate the power of ritual to bind us together into a community willing to take risks, grow spiritually, and celebrate joyfully. Bring a flower from home if you have one!
