Find the Shoes That Fit-A Devotion By Pastor Todd
(Longer Post)
I recently heard a conversation on a sports talk radio show about which NBA player wore the largest shoe size. It ended up being a three-way tie between Shaquille O'Neal, Bob Lanier, and Tacko Fall. All three wore a size 22 shoe.
Those are some big shoes.
Especially when you consider that the average adult male wears somewhere between a size 10½ and 11.
As I listened to that conversation, it got me thinking about shoes. I've always been a shoe guy. In fact, I peeked into my closet recently and counted more than forty pairs.
Different colors. Different styles. Different brands. Different designs.
Every pair was created for a specific purpose. Some are for running. Some are for hiking. Some are for work. Some are for special occasions. Yet every shoe in my closet has one thing in common—they are all either a size 10½ or 11.
Why? Because that's what fits me.
I could try wearing Shaq's size 22 shoes, but they wouldn't work. I'd stumble around, lose my balance, and probably trip over my own feet. Something designed to help me move forward would actually hold me back.
The opposite is true as well. If I squeezed into shoes that were too small, I might make it through a day, but eventually my feet would ache. Every step would become uncomfortable. What should have helped me move would become painful.
The truth is simple: shoes only work when they fit.
The same principle applies to our lives.
One of the easiest traps to fall into is trying to live someone else's life. We compare ourselves to people we admire. We look at their gifts, their success, their influence, their personality, or their accomplishments and think, "Maybe I should be more like them."
But God never created you to be someone else.
He created you to be you.
The Bible tells us that we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works that He prepared in advance for us to do (Ephesians 2:10). That means God designed you with a purpose. He gave you your personality, your experiences, your gifts, and your opportunities for a reason.
Yet many people spend their lives trying to wear someone else's shoes.
Some try to pursue a calling that belongs to someone else. Others chase a dream that wasn't meant for them. Some compare their journey to everyone around them and end up frustrated because they don't look, sound, lead, serve, or succeed like someone they admire.
The problem isn't that those other shoes are bad.
They just don't fit.
God never asked you to become someone else. He simply asks you to faithfully become who He created you to be.
That's why one of my favorite stories in Scripture is when David prepared to face Goliath. King Saul offered David his armor, and David tried it on. But it didn't fit. David quickly realized he couldn't fight in someone else's armor. So he took it off and went into battle with the sling and stones God had already prepared him to use.
Saul's armor wasn't wrong.
It just wasn't David's.
And many of us are exhausted because we're trying to wear armor that doesn't fit and shoes we were never meant to walk in.
There is incredible freedom when you stop comparing yourself to others and start embracing God's purpose for your life.
There is peace when you stop trying to live up to someone else's expectations.
There is joy when you stop chasing someone else's assignment.
And there is confidence when you realize that God doesn't need another version of them—He wants the person He created you to be.
Maybe today you feel frustrated because your life doesn't look like someone else's. Maybe you've been measuring your worth against the success, talents, or accomplishments of others.
If so, remember this:
God has a unique purpose for your life.
Your shoes may not look like everyone else's. They may not be flashy or impressive. They may not attract attention. But if they're the shoes God gave you, they're exactly what you need.
Stop trying to wear someone else's shoes.
Find the ones God created for you.
Then walk confidently in them, knowing that the God who designed your purpose will also guide your steps.
**Prayer**
Father, thank You for creating me with purpose and intention. Forgive me for the times I've compared myself to others or tried to become someone You never called me to be. Help me embrace the gifts, opportunities, and calling You have placed in my life. Give me the courage to walk confidently in the path You have prepared for me and the wisdom to trust Your design. May my life bring glory to You as I faithfully walk in the shoes You created for me. In Jesus' name, Amen.
