Juneteenth is a celebration of freedom, resilience, and the enduring strength of Black communities.
Today we remember that freedom did not arrive all at once. Even after emancipation was declared, many enslaved people waited years to hear the news. The promise of freedom existed, but the reality had not yet reached everyone.

That story still speaks to us today.

Juneteenth invites us to celebrate the courage of those who came before us while asking where freedom, dignity, and opportunity are still unevenly distributed. It reminds us that remembering history is not about living in the past. It is about understanding how the past shapes the present and how we are called to shape the future.
We honor the generations of Black leaders, organizers, artists, educators, pastors, and everyday people whose perseverance transformed this country and continue to challenge it to live up to its ideals.
As people of faith, we believe God's vision is bigger than survival. It is liberation. It is belonging. It is a world where every person is treated as a beloved child of God.
So today we celebrate how far we've come. We tell the truth about where we've been. And we recommit ourselves to the work that remains.

Because none of us are truly free until all of us are free.

What a berry sweet afternoon! 🍓
A huge thank you to everyone who joined us for our Marionberries fellowship event. From good food and great conversations to plenty of laughter, it was a wonderful reminder that church is about more than Sunday mornings. It's about building community, sharing life together, and making memories along the way.
We're grateful for each person who made this event so special!

At Salem First, we celebrate Pride because we mean it.
Not because it's trendy. Not because it's expected. Not because it's one Sunday a year.

We celebrate Pride because LGBTQ+ people are beloved by God, essential to the life of the church, and worthy of more than welcome. They belong.
We know the church has too often been a source of hurt for q***r people. We want to be part of something different: a community where people can bring their whole selves, ask hard questions, grow in faith, and know they are loved exactly as they are.

Happy Pride Month. We're glad SO you're here.

Today, we remember the lives lost to war.
Memorial Day is more than a long weekend or the start of summer. It is a day marked by grief, sacrifice, empty chairs, folded flags, and families forever changed. We pause to honor those who died serving their country, and we hold close the weight of that loss.
As people of faith, we also pray for a world where fewer lives are claimed by violence, where peace is pursued with courage, and where every human life is treated as sacred. We give thanks for those who served, we mourn those who never came home, and we pray for all who carry the wounds of war, both visible and invisible.
May we be people who remember well, and love deeply.
