I return to this quote every now and then, and I think it’s because there’s something much deeper in it than the usual idea that “love is never wasted.”

What strikes me is the last part: “its value does not rest upon reciprocity.”

That is such a profound way of thinking about love. We are so accustomed to measuring things by their returns. I give, you give. I care, you care. I show up, you show up. And when the return doesn’t come, we are tempted to conclude that what we gave was somehow wasted.

But this quote challenges that whole way of thinking.

It suggests that the worth of love isn’t determined by what it produces for the person who gives it. Love can be real, meaningful and valuable even when it is not returned, even when it is misunderstood, even when it doesn’t change the other person, and even when the relationship eventually ends.

I think that’s why I keep coming back to it. There’s something almost unsettling about the freedom contained in that idea. If love only has value when it is reciprocated, then we are always, at least partly, treating love as a transaction. But if its value exists independently of its return, then loving someone can be an act of its own worth.

And perhaps that is what makes the quote so beautiful to me. It doesn't say unreturned love doesn't hurt. It doesn't say we should remain where we aren't loved well. It simply refuses to call the love itself a waste.

Bought a new to me boat the other day, put it in the water today. It is a smaller fishing boat so I was unsure and excited both as I put it in the water and put myself in the boat. Would it be stable enough or would I be dumped in the water.
I put my trust in the boat, its construction and design.i can say I am pleasantly surprised and dry.
The same can be said about everything I do in a day. I put my trust in the designer , His wonderful craftsmanship and His plan for me. To begin my day with Him in His word and prayer allows for my motivation and builds up my faith in the Lord. Beginning and following through in His lead for my day expresses my faith in the creator of heaven and earth. Once I am done I realize His blessings and am above appreciative as I realize He was with me through it all.

Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good. His love endures forever.” – Psalm 136:1
