Fr. Ge**er celebrated his last mass with us here at OLHC this weekend. We pray he continues to be blessed in beautiful Montana and thank him for his time here with us!

“With Fr. Ge**er departing and not being replaced, after Memorial Day we will only have two priests for three parishes. As a result, we need to revise the current weekend Mass times at Ste. Genevieve, Sacred Heart, and Our Lady, Help of Christians. The input of all parishioners is very helpful in determining what the revised Mass schedule will be. If you are a parishioner of Ste. Genevieve, Sacred Heart, or Our Lady, Help of Christians, please take this survey to share your thoughts. Survey deadline is Friday, May 8.

Fire of 1936
On January 5, 1936, our beautiful church caught fire. The speculated cause of the blaze is the candles on the Christmas trees. Local parishioners rushed to save the church, but couldn’t put out the flames. They directed their attention to the sacristy. While the blazes raged, willing hands succeeded in carrying all the vestments and many of the church proper to safety. This includes the fine vestment cabinet made by Fr. Muehlsiepen, who was pastor between 1896-1910. This cabinet is still in the sacristy today! Both fire departments from Ste. Genevieve and Farmington arrived, but by the time they did, they decided to focus all their attention on saving the rectory and school.

The church was built between 1872 and 1874. The walls of church were constructed with stone, quarried and hauled by our own parishioners. The walls were built by all the volunteer labor, sweat, and many, many man hours. After the fire, all that stood were those stone walls of the church edifice, which served as a grim reminder of the awful tragedy.

However, as I have researched, the spirit of Our Lady Help of Christians is not based in a building, but in the hearts of its dedicated families, and, wow! did our people rally hard for its church in 1936 under the leadership of our pastor, Fr. William A. Kotte. It was stated that plans to rebuild the inside of the church were being made before the embers even cooled. When Fr. Kotte passed away in January of 1938, he had the satisfaction of knowing our church had been fully rebuilt and ready for worship once again!

This week marks the 90th anniversary of the tragedy, but also the 90th anniversary of coming together as an OLHC community to rebuild to become even stronger than before. I love this little church, its people, and its history.🤍 ⛪️ 🤍

Fr. Burkemper preached this morning and reminded us that we must put our best selves in front of the Lord. Here at OLHC, we have some of the very best role models in our parents, grandparents, and those before them who have shown us how to give our very best. I am forever grateful for that.
