Paradoxes About the Person of Christ

• Matthew 1:11 - Jeconiah
• Jeremiah 22:28-30 - If no descendant of his would rule on the throne of David, then how did he get into Jesus’ genealogy?
His descendants had the legal right to rule, but won’t because of the curse.
• Matthew 1:16 - ‘of whom’ is feminine singular, meaning ‘of Mary’, not of Joseph. Also, v18 indicates that she was with child before they came together.
• So the curse in Jeremiah didn’t affect Jesus because he was not the physical offspring of Joseph.

Finding a Buried Treasure

• 2 Chronicles chapter 34
• vss1-2 - Josiah was eight years old when he became king, but was doing what God wanted him to do.
• vs3 - When he was 20 he began to get rid of idols and restore proper worship.
• vss4-8 - When he was 26, he continued to carry out reforms that purified the nation and the temple.
• vss14-15 - They found the Bible.
• vs18 - They read the Bible to the king.
• vss19-21 - The wanted the people to obey the Bible.
• vss29-30 - The king read the Bible to the people.
• vss31-33 - Josiah and the people renewed their commitment to the Bible. (2 Thessalonians 2:13).

A Good Thing Which Became an Idol

• Matthew 1:10 - Hezekiah
• Numbers 21:4-9 - The people became discouraged and grumbled ungratefully. God sent venomous snakes as judgment, but also provided a cure by having Moses lift a serpent on a pole, and anyone that looked to the cure in faith would be healed.
• This ties in with the gospel in John 3:14-16, 12:32, 6:40.
• Around 700 years later, in 2 Kings 18:1-4, king Hezekiah has to destroy the serpent on the pole, since the Israelites had come to treat it as an idol.

Men's study group starting 1 Corinthians, either Fridays at 8am or Mondays at 7pm; starting Sep 11th and 14th.

Doing the Lord’s Work in the Lord’s Way

• Matthew 1:8-9 - Uzziah, a teenager who loved God, but died alone as a l***r.
• 2 Chronicles 26:-5 - He became king at 16, and sought the Lord.
• 2 Chronicles 26:8, 15b-16 - He became strong and powerful, and in his pride entered the temple to burn incense, which was to be done only by the priests.
• 2 Chronicles 26:17-23 - He ended up having leprosy and living in isolation.
• Pride goes before a fall. Proverbs 16:18.
• There are times when we should listen to the counsel of other godly people. 2 Chronicles 26:17; Proverbs 11:14.
• Above all, we need to keep our eyes on Christ. Hebrews 12:1-2.
• Don’t sin in doing right (don’t do the right thing in the wrong way) Philippians 2:5-11.

• Matthew’s genealogy in 1:8 mentions Jehoshaphat - 1 Corinthians 10:11 - The events of the Old Testament are written for our admonition; their living lessons.
• 2 Chronicles 17:1-3 - “Because” he walked in David’s ways, God was with him.
• 2 Chronicles 17:5-9 - “Therefore” the Lord established the kingdom under him; the Book of the Law was taught throughout Judah.
• 2 Chronicles 17:10 - “And” the fear of the Lord was on surrounding nations, giving peace.

• What did the world think of Solomon?
• 1 Kings 10:1-7 - the Queen of Sheba heard of his fame.
• What did God think of Solomon?
• 1 Kings 11:1 - Solomon, at one point, had put God first, but:
• His fame and ability didn’t keep him from sin.
• His knowledge didn’t keep him from sin. 1 Kings 4:32-34
• His age didn’t keep him from sin. 1 Kings 11:4-10
• His past blessings didn’t keep him from sin. 1 Kings 4:29-31
• Being born again gives us a new nature, but doesn’t eradicate the old nature.
