God Rules and Overrules

• Matthew 1:1 - This family line meets the requirements for inclusion of the Messiah.
• Our God can create rules and can still overrule and use sinful, broken people.
• Abraham was married, but wasn’t satisfied in being childless, so goes along with worldly customs at that time. Genesis 16:1-5; 17:15-16
• “Marriage is a living parable and a concrete symbol that models for the world the mystical union between Jesus Christ and His people.”

The Providence of God in the Genealogy of Christ

• Matthew 1:1 - Why would Matthew decide to start his account of the life of Jesus with a genealogy? Because the people of God for centuries prior to this were looking forward to a Messiah (anointed one) coming from a specific group and lineage.
God had made promises (covenants) to both Abraham and David.
• We can see both the guiding hand of God and the providing hand of God.
• Providence: ’Pro’ - before; ‘videre’ - to see.
• This genealogy includes the threat of a broken chain and those who, at first glance, would not be expected;.
• It begins with 3 generations in which the culturally accepted firstborn son was not part of the Messianic line.

The Glorification of Believers

• 1 Corinthians 15:50 - An earthly body cannot get into God’s eternal kingdom.
• Heaven isn’t a state of mind, but a place. John 14:2
• Philippians 3:20-21 - Our ‘conversation’ (politics; citizenship; community) is in heaven.
• The city where believers will one day live is called ‘the new Jerusalem’. Revelation 21:2. It will be a cube 1,400 miles wide, long and high.
• It’s a place where God dwells, the effects of sin will be obliterated, and the glory of God lights up the whole city.

You’ll Find the Answer in Your Garden

• 1 Corinthians 15 - 2 questions being answered:
• What happens to the bodies of living believers at the rapture?
• What happens to the bodies of dead believers at the rapture?
• v35-37 - The resurrected body will be related to our physical body.
• v38-42a - The resurrected body will also be different from our physical body.
• v42-44 - The resurrected body will be more glorious than our physical body.

But Were the Fish Kosher?

• Luke 5:1-11 - Simon is responsible to catch fish for his community. Even though they’d caught nothing that night, he swallowed his pride and obeyed Jesus.
• John 21:1-6 - A similar scenario plays out.
• The next time Jesus tells us to ‘move our boat’, or ‘cast our nets on the other side’, we would do well to listen and obey.

The Coming of Our Lord Jesus Christ

• It’s a ‘mystery’ (1 Corinthians 15:50-54); that which is known to the initiated (those who have certain privileges and information).
• It includes all believers - we will ‘all’ be changed.
• It is imminent - it encompasses both certainty (it will happen) and uncertainty (when will it happen?).
• It is a sudden event - v52, in a ‘moment’ or ‘flash’. Literally: ‘atom’, from ‘a-tomos’, without cutting. Previously, an atom was the smallest known entity. Not able to be cut or divided any further.
