What happens when we make room for a conversation—even about the things that divide us?

At MCC's recent Respectful Conversation on Shared and Shattered Truths following operations Metro Surge and PARRIS, 50+ people gathered at United Faith Methodist to have an open, supported dialogue.

The impact? 83% of participants reported stronger relationships, and 86% said they felt more confident talking with people about divisive issues.

Behind those numbers were meaningful experiences. Participants described “feeling safe” and discovering that “good things happen in a short period of time.”

One person shared, “I learned that authentic and real conversations are vital in practicing curiosity, which is some of the strongest medicine for us in these times.”

During an election season that can deepen division, these experiences remind us that connection is possible. Democracy depends on our ability to stand together—and making space to listen is one way to practice that.

Want to bring this opportunity to your community? Partner with MCC to host a Respectful Conversation on Shared and Shattered Truths, the election, or another topic where peace is needed.

Today marks one year since two children were murdered at Annunciation Catholic Church and School and the paths of countless lives were forever changed. The scars left by this horrific tragedy will never fully fade, nor will Minnesota Council of Churches' commitment to supporting our community.

At an August 8 gathering organized by Annunciation Light Alliance and Protect Minnesota, MCC Respectful Conversations Lead Facilitator Joan Haan delivered a training on how to have depolarizing conversations about difficult topics. MCC was invited to help the Catholic community engage with their congregations in understanding and healing from the impact of the Annunciation violence.

MCC and our member denominations grieve deeply with the students, families, teachers, and neighbors whose lives have been irreversibly altered by this tragedy. We weep with those who weep. We lift up in prayer the little ones who are crying out for peace, for healing, and for the safety every child deserves.

We will not allow the shadow of violence to overcome the light of love. Together, we remain steadfast in rejecting any act that tears at the fabric of our schools, churches, and neighborhoods. And we stand shoulder to shoulder with our brothers and sisters in faith, seeking God’s comfort, strength, and wisdom as we navigate the world around us.

On Thursday, Aug. 27, Minneapolis will hold a day of service in honor of the Annunciation community. The City invites community members to plant flowers and trees, assemble care kits for youth.
