Here's the letter St. Paul Mennonite is sending to Mennonite Central Committee encouraging them to work to provide humane shelter for immigrant children:

To: J Ron Byler, Executive Director
Mennonite Central Committee U.S.
PO Box 500
Akron, PA 17501

Date: June 30, 2019

Dear Director Byler,

As members of the St. Paul Mennonite Fellowship, we appreciate the many and varied domestic projects of the MCC, especially those, given our circumstances, that help meet the needs of immigrants.

With increasing reports of the intolerable conditions in which young migrants are being detained, we encourage you to consider working with the Department of Homeland Security to provide a humane shelter for some of those children. At least one other nonprofit organization, BCFS, is doing something of that sort in Texas.

Doing so, if feasible, would seem to fit MCC’s stated role of responding to basic human needs. Certainly the need is great. The U.S. has incarcerated some 10,000 immigrant children, according to the Southern Poverty Law Center. The American Academy of Pediatrics has issued a statement on the impact of toxic stress on the physical and mental health of young immigrants and their need for protection.

Blessings,

Members of the St. Paul Mennonite Fellowship
