The New Vineyard and the New People

The word of the Saviour is clear and solemn: “Therefore I say to you, the kingdom of God will be taken from you and given to a nation bearing the fruits of it.” (Matt. 21:43). The Lord does not say that the vineyard will be destroyed, but that it will be entrusted to other labourers. The plan of God cannot be halted by human unbelief, and His love cannot remain confined within the boundaries of one people alone. Through the coming of Christ, the vineyard is enlarged and embraces all the nations of the earth.

This new nation is the Church, the new Israel, formed neither according to blood nor language, but from all those who believe in Christ and are born of water and the Spirit. The Holy Apostle Peter calls the baptised “a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people” (1 Pet. 2:9). They are the branches grafted onto the True Vine, the living stones built upon Christ, and the labourers called to bring forth the fruits of the Kingdom.

In Christ, those who were near and those who were far off are gathered into one Body, and the dividing wall between men is broken down. The Chief Cornerstone joins together the two sides of the building: the Old and the New Covenants, the chosen people of old and the nations called to faith, heaven and earth, God and man.

The new vineyard also has a new winepress. From the pierced side of the Saviour flowed blood and water, an image of Baptism and of the Eucharist. Through the water of Baptism we are born as children of the Kingdom, and through the Body and Blood of the Lord we receive the life-giving sap of eternal life. Christ does not merely call us to labour in His vineyard; He Himself nourishes us, so that our labour may not remain barren.

The Church, therefore, is not a vineyard which we may possess according to our own will, but a gift entrusted to us for safekeeping and fruitfulness. She does not belong to us, but to Christ. The true Master of the vineyard remains God, while we are only stewards of the grace entrusted to us.

Sunday's Gospel:
At that time, a young man came up to Jesus, kneeling and saying, “Good Teacher, what good deed must I do, to have eternal life?”... If you would enter life, keep the commandments.” (Matthew 19,16)
"Şi, iată, venind un tânăr la El, I-a zis: Bunule Învăţător, ce bine să fac, ca să am viaţa veşnică?.. de vrei să intri în viaţă, păzeşte poruncile. El I-a zis: Care? Iar Iisus i-a răspuns: Să nu ucizi, să nu faci desfrânare, să nu furi, să nu mărturisești strâmb; cinstește pe tatăl tău și pe mama ta și să iubești pe aproapele tău ca pe tine însuți. " (Matei 19 , 16 - 26)

As we enter the Dormition Fast, the Holy Church calls us into a sacred season of prayer, fasting, repentance, and renewed devotion to Christ through the example and intercessions of His Most Holy Mother.

May these days be more than a change in what we eat. May they become a true fast of the heart, turning away from anger, judgment, pride, and distraction, while growing in mercy, humility, forgiveness, and love

Wishing all who begin the Fast a blessed and spiritually fruitful journey toward the glorious Feast of the Dormition. ☦️
