Messiah Episcopal Church

Messiah Episcopal Church We are an Episcopal Church in the Anglican Communion. Mission: The Worship of God; the Lordship of Christ; Renewal Through the Holy Spirit.

Following Jesus through Christian Formation, Spiritual Renewal, Human Diversity, Evangelism & Biblical Justice. Responding to God’s grace, we gather in worship through word and sacraments and proclaim God’s message of redemption through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Empowered by the Holy Spirit, we follow Jesus as he transforms the world for God’s purpose. Led by God, and in d

ependence on his grace and power, we aim:

To be loyal to the faith
revealed in the Bible and cherished by the church across the ages and around the world, sustained by liturgical worship that is authentic, reverent, vibrant, and creative. Many of us came to Messiah as Christians; all of us are on a journey to Christ-likeness. Regardless of distinctions, we are called to use our gifts to the full. We are men, women, and youth who work in partnership with the church to carry out God’s work. We encourage active participation in worship through various means such as music, art, drama, and dance, and serving as readers, ushers, and eucharistic ministers. As members of the Episcopal Diocese of Minnesota and the Anglican Communion, we are committed to working for their renewal. To grow in obedience to Christ
through biblical teaching and mutual encouragement, so that we may follow our Lord in faithful and loving service to him and to one another. Education ministries include a unique children’s program, Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, as well as Sunday school for junior and senior high youth, confirmation curriculum, and adult classes. The youth program sees kids coming to Christ and Christian kids becoming Christian adults. It features Wednesday evening worship, Bible study and fellowship, special events, a week-long junior high camp, and an annual mission trip. Small groups that meet in people’s homes (house groups) are an important way that we grow in discipleship. To promote healing and transformation
through the power of the Holy Spirit by engaging in outreach in our community and the wider world, and providing prayer and financial support in a variety of contexts. We are mostly English speakers with a growing immigrant presence. Our outreach includes a long-time partnership with the Episcopal Diocese of Haiti, overseas missionaries, and service to the homeless. We offer ministries of healing and intercessory prayer.

Today we remember the Martyrs of Uganda.

The Uganda Martyrs are a group of 23 converts to Christianity in the historical kingdom of Buganda killed, for not compromising their faith when ordered to by the King of Buganda. Their witness, as they went to their deaths singing hymns and praying for their enemies, led to the spread of the Gospel.

O God, by whose providence the blood of the martyrs is the seed of the church: Grant that we who remember before you the blessed martyrs of Uganda, may, like them, be steadfast in our faith in Jesus Christ, to whom they gave obedience even to death, and by their sacrifice brought forth a plentiful harvest; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
Amen.

The Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Father in heaven, by your grace the virgin mother of your incarnate Son was blessed in bearing him, but still more blessed in keeping your word: Grant us who honor the exaltation of her lowliness to follow the example obf her devotion to your will; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

After the angel Gabriel had announced to Mary that she was to become the mother of Our Lord, Mary went from Galilee to Judea to visit her kinswoman Elizabeth, soon to be the mother of John the Baptist. This visit is recorded in Luke 1:39-56. Elizabeth greeted Mary with the words, "Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb." Mary burst forth with the song of praise which we call the Magnificat, beginning, "My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord." We are told that even John the Baptist, still unborn, leaped for joy in his mother's womb. Thus we are shown, side by side, the two women, one seemingly too old to have a child, but destined to bear the last prophet of the Old Covenant, of the age that was passing away; and the other woman, seemingly not ready to have a child, but destined to bear the One Who was Himself the beginning of the New Covenant, the age that would not pass away.

It is this meeting that we celebrate today.

We celebrate the Holy Trinity.

A Sonnet for the Trinity by Malcolm Guite; the Trimty icon of Andrei Rubelev depicting the the three angels vising Abraham at the Oaks of Mamre:

In the Beginning, not in time or space,
But in the quick before both space and time,
In Life, in Love, in co-inherent Grace,
In three in one and one in three, in rhyme,
In music, in the whole creation story,
In His own image, His imagination,
The Triune Poet makes us for His glory,
And makes us each the other’s inspiration.
He calls us out of darkness, chaos, chance,
To improvise a music of our own,
To sing the chord that calls us to the dance,
Three notes resounding from a single tone,
To sing the End in whom we all begin;
Our God beyond, beside us and within.

Worship the Trinity, on Trinity Sunday.

Sunday, May 31st is Trinity Sunday, as we worship Father,
Son, and Holy Spirit.

Almighty and everlasting God, you have given to us
your servants grace, by the confession of a true faith, to
acknowledge the glory of the eternal Trinity, and in the
power of your divine Majesty to worship the Unity: Keep
us steadfast in this faith and worship, and bring us at last to
see you in your one and eternal glory, O Father; who with
the Son and the Holy Spirit live and reign, one God, for ever
and ever. Amen.
