We are collecting school supplies for families in need today from 9am to 6pm. Store locations are Strawberry Point, Guttenberg, Elkader, Monona and Postville. We have LOTS of children in need this year. Please help us help others.

Walking Together: The ELCA's Commitment to Accompaniment



As Bishop Kevin Jones and Synod staff accompany Pastor Lynn Noel, St. Paul's Lutheran Church, and the people of Postville, and Zion Lutheran Church, Castalia and Pastor Daryl Schultz, we do so in this spirit of accompaniment—listening, praying, supporting, and walking together.

Please continue to pray for all those affected by the fire and for the many individuals and organizations committed to the community's recovery.

If you would like to support those affected by the fire, we encourage you to give to the 2026 Postville Fire Community Support Fund through the Community Foundation of Greater Dubuque and the Allamakee County Community Foundation. This fund will provide grants to qualified nonprofit and community organizations responding to immediate needs and supporting long-term recovery efforts.

The Allamakee County Community Foundation and Community Foundation of Greater Dubuque are working closely with local nonprofits, community leaders, and emergency response partners to assess needs and support recovery efforts across the community.

As we continue to hold the Postville community in prayer, we are reminded that the ELCA's Lutheran Disaster Response ministry is grounded in a powerful principle: accompaniment.

Accompaniment means walking alongside communities before, during, and after a disaster—not arriving with answers, but standing with local leaders, congregations, and neighbors as they discern the path forward together. Because every disaster is local, the people who know the community best are also the ones best equipped to lead its recovery.

Lutheran Disaster Response works across the entire disaster cycle:

🟢 Preparedness & Mitigation – helping communities build resilience, plan for risks, and strengthen their capacity to respond.

🟡 Response – providing immediate support, emotional and spiritual care, and coordination with local leaders during a crisis.

🔵 Recovery – walking with communities for the long haul, addressing ongoing needs and supporting rebuilding efforts months and even years after a disaster.

This work is rooted in:

❤️ Relational Presence – being present with those affected and building trusted partnerships.

🤝 Local Leadership – recognizing and supporting the leadership already present in the community.

🌱 Holistic Care – addressing emotional, spiritual, practical, and community needs.

Shepherd of the Hills is partnering with Dollar General to collect school supplies for families in need. We will be in our local Dollar Generals on Saturday August 1 from 9am to 6pm. This event helps families in need, helping children prepare for school. You can buy supplies and donate them in the box or you can donate money and I will buy them. Stores participating are Postville, Elkader, Strawberry Point, Monona and Guttenberg. We especially will collect items for families in Postville that have a referral. Please help us help orhers.
