In the Old Testament, the priests were given the privilege of eating a portion of the sacrifice that was offered upon the altar. What was holy and set apart by God became food for those He had called into His service.
Now listen to the words of St. Peter: “But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for His own possession…” (1 Peter 2:9). Through faith in Christ, believers have been brought into this royal priesthood. We who trust in Him are welcomed into the presence of God by the sacrifice of Jesus Christ.
And what a sacrifice He has given us! Upon the altar of the cross, Christ offered Himself once and for all for the sins of the world. Yet He does not leave His priesthood empty-handed. Just as the priests of old ate from the sacrifice, so Christ feeds His faithful people with His true body and blood in the Holy Supper for the forgiveness of sins, the strengthening of faith, and the promise of eternal life.
But this priesthood is not closed. Christ still calls sinners to repentance and faith. The doors of His Church remain open to all who would hear His Word, believe His Gospel, and join themselves to this fellowship of believers. Those who do not yet share this faith are lovingly invited to come and hear the good news of Jesus Christ, who died and rose again for the salvation of the world.
This Sunday, we invite you to join us for worship. Come hear the Word of God proclaimed. Come witness the fellowship of Christ’s royal priesthood gathered around His gifts. And if you seek this faith and this community, know that Christ Himself calls you: “Come to Me.”
Join us this Sunday as we gather in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
