A LOOK BACK AT WALNUT GROVE HISTORY ⛪

Early in the 1860s, Methodist circuit riders began coming to this community and holding worship services.

Services were held in a frame schoolhouse that stood across the road from the present church, known as the Noble Township Schoolhouse, District #1.

The schoolhouse served as both a school and a church until 1876, when Walnut Grove Church was built across the road from the school.

Our church took its name from the walnut grove in which it was built.

It wasn’t until 1901 that a vestibule and steeple were added to the church and the bell was installed.

The bell rang from the steeple for 77 years, until lightning struck the steeple in June 1978. Fire consumed the vestibule and steeple, causing the bell to fall to the ground.

The bell remained in storage until it was later placed in the churchyard, where it could serve as a reminder of Walnut Grove’s history.

Through the help and support of our church family, we were able to distribute 91 meal bags from our food pantry during the month of September!

The food pantry is open every Monday from 4:00–6:00 PM for anyone who may need a little extra support. We are blessed to provide food for the week, hygiene supplies, prayer, and Bibles to those who come through our doors.

We are so thankful for everyone who gives, serves, prays, and helps make this ministry possible. May the Lord continue to bless this ministry and each person and family it serves!

Every Sunday, our worship begins with the ringing of the bell, calling the saints of God together around His gifts and for many of the children in our congregation, it is one of their favorite parts of Sunday morning.

The bell calls us from the busyness of the world to gather where Christ has promised to meet His people: in His Word and Sacraments. Here, sinners are forgiven, faith is strengthened, and God’s people are sent back into their homes, schools, workplaces, and communities to live out their Christian vocations.

May the ringing of the bell also remind us that the Church is called to proclaim Christ crucified and risen, to teach the faith to the next generation, and to make disciples by baptizing and teaching all that our Lord has commanded.

The bell calls us in to receive Christ’s gifts and the Gospel sends us out to share them.

“Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” Matthew 28:19
