I have been asked to post Brooke's request to the Jewish community. I hope you consider joining Brooke's school project. Please direct your answers to either the Temple email: [email protected] or leave a message on this page.

"Hello everyone,
My name is Brooke Rich and I am married to Jeff Rich's eldest grandson, Alex Rich. I have met some of you a few times at Beit Echad. I am a history teacher at Lafayette High School here in St. Joseph and in the month of April my Sociology students are going to create a project on the Jewish history and life in St. Joseph. I have been able to partner with the St. Joseph Museums and they have agreed to give us an actual physical space to create an exhibit that will be housed there. They currently do not have any displays on Jewish life or Jewish people in St. Joseph. Unless you are Jewish or know someone who is Jewish, you would not know any Jewish people lived/live here. I want to change that and I hope that you will help me. I want my students to be able to talk to you about your life as Jewish member of the St. Joseph community. This would be on your schedule and it could be face to face at LHS, over the phone, or even via Zoom. I am not looking for you to explain every detail of Judaism, but simply tell us about your memories and family members. If there are pictures that you would be willing to show my students of your family or friends celebrating Jewish holidays or weddings that would be amazing too.
I am excited to hear from you all and hopefully partner in this important and exciting project.
Stay warm,
Brooke Rich"

I was asked to share the following information to our community. May Dina's memory forever be a blessing to the world.

"Dear Friend,

Three years ago, my daughter Dina drowned in a tragic accident, forever changing my life. Now, as a mother on a mission, I’m dedicated to, with G-d's help preventing other families from enduring such a devastating loss. Drowning is the leading cause of accidental death for children under five. Drownings happen (G-d forbid) quickly and quietly, even with adults nearby. The CDC reports that 88% of drownings happen with at least one adult nearby.

I’ve recently become involved with Team Protect, a nonprofit dedicated to preventing childhood tragedies through awareness, education, and smart safety tools. Team Protect has been working tirelessly to identify the best safety solutions and add vital layers of protection. Among them are the SwamCam, an external camera that alerts when someone enters the pool, and the Coral Mylo, an AI-powered underwater camera that not only detects pool entry but also identifies drownings in real time and alerts caregivers instantly.

Read our comparative analysis on pool technology and life-saving safety information here: kidsafepool.org

These tools are not replacements for supervision or fencing, but they are powerful additional safeguards, and they’ve already helped save lives. Please also take a moment to watch this short video. Sharing this email and video with your community and friends could be a lifesaving decision.

Please also consider sharing the following key safety tips:
Active, Constant Supervision: Designate a responsible adult as a “water watcher” whose only job is to actively supervise swimmers. Switch every 15 minutes to stay alert. Phones should be placed in a designated spot near the pool in case of emergency—but not in anyone’s hand during supervision.
Post Visible Poolside Information: Keep emergency contacts, your home address, and other critical info posted near the pool where it’s easy to find in a crisis.
Set Up the Pool Properly: Install a fence at least 4 feet high with self-latching gates. In many places, this is legally required. Never rely on a pool cover alone.
Use Alarms and Detection Tech: Add alarms to pool gates, windows, and doors. Consider a Coral Mylo device—it uses AI to monitor for distress and detect danger in real time, offering critical seconds when they matter most.
Clear the Pool Area After Use & Follow Best Practices: Remove toys and floating objects that may lure children back into the water. Secure flotation devices before entering the pool. Dress children in bright swimsuits—neon orange, pink, and red are easier to see underwater than blues or pastels.
Invest in Swim Lessons: Help your community ensure that children receive age-appropriate swimming and water safety instruction. you can refer them to infantswim.com, which connects parents to certified self-rescue instructors for kids as young as 6 months.

If you’d like more information, or want to get involved in our efforts, please reach out to me at [email protected] or connect with Mimi Marozov on our team at (929) 582 - 5625.

It is with a heavy heart that I report the passing of our precious Rose Mazvinsky. There will be a graveside service Friday, January 31, 2025 at 10am at Shaare Sholem cemetery in Saint Joseph. Following the service a luncheon will be served at Beit Echad for family and friends. May our memories of Rose support her family and our community as we mourn.

Rabbi Hirsch recently spoke before Women of Reform Judaism about saying yes to all interested in Judaism. Our community has been saying "yes" for decades! Thank you Rabbi Hirsch for urging inclusion into our Temples for all who are interested.

Today we said good-bye. Our matriarch Anna Schwarz passed to her eternal reward.

We have had several great matriarchs in my time here in Saint Joseph. Anna will be remembered as one of the greatest. She served our community in many, many ways. And, as our numbers declined she took on too many roles to count.

I was blessed to have her call me friend. May her memory be an eternal blessing to all who met her. I know I will be eternally blessed by my memories of her. May her family find their grief eased by theirs. May they be in your thoughts and prayers.

Saint Joseph Jewish Community members met Tuesday night and elected a board for Beit Echad. The following were elected: Bob Ott, president; Anne DeLeon, vice president; Hans Peter, secretary; Eliana Baylor, treasurer; Steve Rosenak, director; Sandy Smail, director; Michele Richman, director.

An update was given on the remodeling work and new Ark design for the new space. Although there have been delays due to illness, work is progressing quickly and estimated finish dates place us in the new space before Passover.

We hope to see many of you who follow this page at events in there in the future.

Within a few weeks our Adath Joseph bulletin will be phased out as a bimonthly publication. A new bulletin that reflects the new united nature of our worship and community will take its place.

As a result, given our commitment to publish our yahrzeit lists, you will begin to see the yahrzeit lists posted here. To that end, I need your input. How often would you like to see the lists published? And, when? Right now they are published bimonthly at the beginning of odd numbered months.

As many of you know, our small Jewish community here is Saint Joseph is going through many changes. A new combined congregation, Beit Echad, is forming. A new location for worship is being prepared. Our beloved building at 17th and Felix is being sold. New beginnings.

So, what is NOT changing. Our commitment to working with members the greater Jewish community and Beit Echad in United worship, as we have done for the past decade, will continue. Honoring all Jewish viewpoints and inclusiveness, not just Reform viewpoints, will continue. We are committed to our historical position of being a "house of worship for all people." We will continue to outreach in educating the greater community about Judaism and pursuing acts of Tiket Olam, repairing the world. We are committed to worshipping as a united Jewish Community AND we are also committed to our historical Reform roots.

To those ends, Congregation Adath Joseph will continue. The legal entity and membership, known as Temple Adath Joseph, are neither disbanding nor ceasing to exist. We are not merging with Temple B'nai Sholem, but rather we are working with our sister congregation to support the formation of a new Jewish house of worship, Beit Echad. Temple Adath Joseph's membership as a founding member of the URJ will continue. Our commitment to Reform Judaism will continue. Our commitments to Adath Joseph cemetery and the various trusts placed in our care will continue. We will continue to remember those who have passed by publishing and reading our yahrzeit lists. We will continue to have our Temple phone, and be available to those seeking information. Our footprint in our greater community may look different. But, Temple Adath Joseph will remain a voice for Reform Judaism.

If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to give them below. Or, if you prefer, contact us by phone or text to 816-279-3179, or by the Temple email, [email protected]. Shalom."
