Thank you Victoria Scherer for lifting up Rev Derek Terry Sunday. Here is more about him.

Derek Terry was ordained at 19 and spent the next decade preaching from inside the closet. At 30, he came out to his congregation on national television, with more than a million people watching.

That was 2015, on OWN's "Iyanla: Fix My Life," filmed in his hometown of Louisville. He had been raised in a family that was openly hostile to gay people, and he told Iyanla Vanzant that saying the words out loud left him feeling petrified.

The loneliness, he said, came from believing no one would love him.

He was wrong about that part. Terry left the Black church tradition he was raised in and took over St. Peter's United Church of Christ in Pleasant Ridge, Cincinnati, a congregation of about 50 mostly older white members that had never had a Black pastor or an openly gay one.

He stayed nine years. By this year he was Executive Director of the Open and Affirming Coalition, which certifies and supports roughly 1,743 LGBTQ+ affirming congregations across the United Church of Christ.

It cost him. In a keynote last year he mentioned that he had been threatened and that his church had been vandalized, and said he was standing with every q***r kid wondering whether the church still loves them.

Rev. Derek Terry died the weekend of August 9 at 42. Friends and colleagues told the Cincinnati Enquirer they were not able to confirm a cause or an exact date, and the UCC has described the loss only as untimely.

His funeral was held in Louisville on August 22, at an AME church, the tradition he once walked away from in order to tell the truth.

Here's a clip from our most recent Taize service. It was a lovely evening with 18 people in attendance, 15 of whom met prior to the service to have tacos at Javier Bill's.
We hope to see you at the next one.
