September 11th. A day we pause to remember.

We remember those who lost their lives. Those who answered cries for help and ran into the chaos. The families forever changed. The survivors and first responders who carry the weight of that day still.

We also remember the care for one another that brought people together in the days, weeks, and months that followed. In the midst of fear and grief, people reached toward one another. That spirit of community gave so many strength.

Here at the Shrine of Christ’s Passion, the Prayer Trail invites us to reflect on the suffering Jesus accepted on our behalf. He entered into the suffering of our world and bore the cross for our salvation. His love calls us to draw close to those who suffer and help carry one another’s burdens.

On this 25th anniversary of the September 11th attacks, we remember the courage of those who ran to help. We pray for the survivors and families whose grief endures, and for all whose lives remain affected.

Wherever you are today, we invite you to pause with us in remembrance and prayer.

May we honor those we remember through the care we offer one another today.

Sometimes we want to be sure before we take the next step.

When Our Lady of Guadalupe appeared to St. Juan Diego, she asked him to carry a message to the local bishop: build a church where people could come to seek her care and consolation. The bishop asked for a sign.

Many of us can understand that hesitation. We want to know that what we are hearing is real. We want to be certain before we risk being misunderstood, follow an unfamiliar path, or say yes to something difficult.

In the story of Guadalupe, Juan Diego returned with roses gathered at the Blessed Mother’s direction. When he opened his cloak before the bishop, the flowers fell, revealing her image upon the fabric.
Here at the Shrine, our depictions of St. Juan Diego and Our Lady of Guadalupe invite us to pause with that story and consider our own. How often do we hesitate when we sense the Holy Spirit calling us toward something difficult? A conversation we have avoided. An opportunity to serve. A first step toward reconciliation.

Faith does not mean we never have questions. Sometimes it begins with making room to listen.

At the Shrine of Christ’s Passion, we offer a prayerful place to bring those questions and open our hearts to God.

As we celebrate Labor Day, The Gift Shoppe will be closed for the holiday. Our Prayer Trail is always open and free to the public, 24/7.

The storms that have passed through our area recently have caused significant damage and reminded us how fragile many of our everyday comforts can be. For those of us who live locally, it has been difficult to think about much else, and we know recovery is still underway for some of our neighbors.

Within hours of the storms passing, Shrine staff, led by our dedicated facilities team, were on the Prayer Trail clearing debris and beginning the difficult work of removing damaged limbs and trees. As soon as the major branches were safely cleared, visitors and pilgrims began returning to the trail.

One guest gathered flowers scattered by the storm and placed them throughout the Prayer Trail. The most striking, for me, was a flower tucked into the knot of Jesus’ cross at the Fourth Station, where He meets His mother.

It was a small splash of vibrant color against a scene of sorrow and suffering. A reminder that even in moments of doubt, pain, or hardship, a small expression of beauty and joy may be enough to encourage us to keep going.

We invite you to visit the Shrine and walk the Prayer Trail. Perhaps a small moment of beauty, hope, or grace is waiting there for you today.

As our communities continue recovering from the recent storms, several local and statewide resources are available to help.

• Indiana 211 can connect residents with disaster assistance, shelter, food, cooling centers, and other community resources. Dial 211 or visit https://in211.communityos.org/

• NIPSCO customers can report an outage and find current power outage information at https://www.nipsco.com/outages/power-outages. For an electrical emergency, call 1-800-464-7726. Stay away from downed power lines and call 911 to report an immediate hazard.

Since power has been restored at the Trustee Office, we will resume our regular business hours beginning Monday, August 17.
Regular business hours:
Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM–4:00 PM.

We will continue to provide Emergency Assistance to St. John Township residents (Dyer, Schererville, St. John and Unincorporated St. John Township) with:
* Food assistance through the St. John Township Food Pantry
* Charging and cooling at the Community Center

Requirement: A valid ID showing proof of St. John Township residency is required.

Our prayers remain with our friends and neighbors who are recovering from the recent storms, including those still without power or facing damage to their homes and communities.

The Shrine has power, and our Visitor Center and Gift Shoppe are open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. If you need to get out of the house and spend some time in an air-conditioned space, you are welcome to visit.

The Prayer Trail is clear and open, weather permitting. Whether you come for prayer, quiet reflection, or simply a change of surroundings, there is a place for you here.
