Sisters of St Francis of Assisi

Sisters of St Francis of Assisi Trusting in God's Providence.

We are gospel women who, trusting in the providence of God and strengthened by community, strive to meet the unmet needs of today, as we walk in the footprints of Jesus, Clare and Francis in mutually sustaining ways with all of creation.

Happy Foundation Day to our Sisters! On May 28, 1849, a small group of courageous women arrived in Wisconsin carrying little more than faith, trust in God’s providence, and a deep desire to live the Gospel in the spirit of St. Francis. That moment marked the beginning of The Sisters of St. Francis of Assisi. Each year on May 28, our Foundation Day, we remember their journey. But more importantly, we celebrate a living legacy that continues through all of the lives the Sisters have touched. In celebration of our Foundation Day, would you please consider making a gift in support of our Sisters? (https://www.lakeosfs.org/content/donate)

San Damiano Chapel Has Been Designated a Pilgrimage Site for the Franciscan Jubilee Year

In recognition of Pope Leo XIV’s proclamation of this year as the Jubilee Year of St. Francis, Milwaukee Archbishop Jeffrey Grob has designated San Damiano Chapel as one of the 11 Franciscan pilgrimage sites in the 10-county Milwaukee archdiocese. The designated days and hours that the chapel will be open to pilgrims, beginning on June 2, will be:
• Tuesdays, Saturdays and Sundays
• 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. each day
Pilgrims should call 414-744-1160 to register for their visit at least one week in advance. The chapel is located in St. Francis Convent, 3221 S. Lake Drive, St. Francis.

The congregation is honored to take part in the Jubilee year in such a meaningful way. We welcome the opportunity to welcome faithful pilgrims and share our Franciscan heritage with all.

Representatives of Sisters’ Corporate Ministries Experience Assisi Pilgrimage

Thirty staff and board members from the corporate ministries of The Sisters of St. Francis of Assisi journeyed together February 21 to March 2, 2026, for a pilgrimage to Assisi and Rome. Led by congregation Director Sister Joanne Schatzlein, OSF, Father Jim Gannon, OFM, and intern Sister Corinna Thomas, FSPA, the 10-day experience takes pilgrims on a journey of a lifetime to the places that were important in the lives of St. Francis and St. Clare of Assisi.
Pilgrims are steeped in the history of the Franciscan religious sites, attend daily Mass in a different historic chapel or church each day, and participate in group discussions and sharing on the various themes of the lives of Francis and Clare. Many of the members of the ministries describe the pilgrimage as life-changing and transformational.
This year the pilgrims visited Assisi at a historic moment. They were there during the special Franciscan Jubilee Year proclaimed by Pope Leo XIV to commemorate the 800th anniversary of the death of St. Francis. They were privileged to be among the hundreds of thousands of pilgrims who travelled to Assisi to view his bones, which were on display in the Basilica of St. Francis. It was the first extended public viewing of the bones in history. They also spent two days in Rome at the end of their time in Italy.
The pilgrims represented the ministries of: St. Francis Convent and Franciscan Shore in St. Francis, Wis.; St. Elizabeth School, Baltimore, Md.; Cardinal Cushing Centers, Hanover, Mass., St. Coletta of Wisconsin, Jefferson, Wis., and St. Coletta’s of Illinois. The pilgrimage is offered each year to staff, leadership, and board members of the congregation’s sponsored corporate ministries.

🌟 Catholic Sisters Week comes to a close 🌟
This week, we’ve shared just a glimpse of the enduring impact of The Sisters of St. Francis of Assisi. Our Sisters have dedicated their lives to responding to the needs of the world with courage, kindness, and care.
As many of our Sisters age and retire, they rely on the generosity of donors to support their health and wellness needs. Supporting them now is one way we honor all they have given.
We invite you to be part of their stories and donate to support their ongoing care and well-being. Your generosity helps ensure they are supported in their elder years, just as they have supported so many.
Thank you for celebrating, sharing, and holding the Sisters in your prayers.

A life overflowing with service.

Sister Ruth Mary Costello felt a call to religious life early in her life. After years teaching and serving as a hospital chaplain, she now supports retired Sisters with care, presence, and a beloved sense of humor.
Her life reminds us that generosity and compassion aren’t only lived in grand gestures, but also in every moment of companionship and care.

I Am the New Year
I am the New Year. I am an unspoiled page in your book of time.
I am your next chance at the art of living.
I am your opportunity to practice what you have learned about life during the last twelve months.
All that you sought and didn't find is hidden in me, waiting for you to search it but with more determination.
All the good that you tried for and didn't achieve is mine to grant when you have fewer conflicting desires.
All that you dreamed but didn't dare to do, all that you hoped but did not will, all the faith that you claimed but did not have-these slumber lightly, waiting to be awakened by the touch of a strong purpose.
I am your opportunity to renew your allegiance to Him who said, "Behold, I make all things new."
