The Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time

He bore them on eagles’ wings. He had compassion for them.

In this week’s readings, two images stand out to give us an idea of the relationship of the Lord with his people; with us.
In today’s First Reading from the Book of Exodus, the first image reminds us that God carried the people of Israel ‘on eagles’ wings’. If they keep his covenant, they will become a holy nation.
The second image, in St. Matthew’s Gospel, is the compassion of Jesus for his people. Feeling sorry for them, he calls his twelve disciples and gives them authority to heal and support them in their helplessness.
When we fully realize the extent of this compassion, we may want to cry out and sing with joy, like the Psalmist in Psalm 100.
However, as the people failed to obey the Lord’s voice, God shows yet again his merciful love through the death of his Son for them; for us, as we hear in St. Paul’s letter to the Ephesians.
This week we are encouraged to focus our prayer especially on those people in the world who feel harassed and helpless, trusting that the Lord will look after them.

The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ (Corpus Christi)

‘Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me and I in them.’

Today’s feast of Corpus Christi invites us to celebrate and reflect with gratitude on the mystery of the Eucharist. This is the great gift of Jesus’s very self: the bread of life. The readings help us see how God nourishes us, draws us together as one, and calls us to trust in him.
In today’s First Reading from the Book of Deuteronomy, Moses recalls how God brought the Israelites out of slavery and led them through the desert, providing manna and water. We are never left alone: the Lord cares for us even in times of struggle.
This theme is echoed in the Psalm 147. The people lift their hearts in thanks to God, singing praise for his guidance, his word, and his protection.
St. Paul explains to the Corinthians in today’s Second Reading that sharing in the body and blood of Christ unites us to Christ and to the whole Christian community, making us one body.
In St. John’s Gospel, Jesus declares himself to be the living bread from heaven. The Eucharist is the new manna, given through Jesus, who promises that he will be with us always as the source of all life.
This week, we are encouraged to pray for a deeper trust in the gift of the Eucharist, and especially for those unable to share in it for whatever reason, remembering that God loves every one of us unconditionally.

The Most Holy Trinity

The God of Love and Peace

This Sunday, after all the events and celebrations of Passiontide and Easter, we come to ponder the great mystery of the Most Holy Trinity, which binds them all together.
In the First Reading from the Book of Exodus, Moses goes up Mount Sinai to plead for his sinful people. He enters the cloud of the Lord’s presence and discovers a God of tenderness, compassion and forgiveness. The Canticle that follows comes from the Book of Daniel, and it is a song of praise to bless and glorify God in the heavens and in creation.
St Paul closes his letter to the Corinthians in today’s Second Reading with a blessing of the three Persons, one God.
St. John’s Gospel is part of Jesus’s conversation with Nicodemus. It clearly states that the Father gave his Son Jesus, with infinite love, to bring eternal life.
This week we are encouraged to live in the fellowship of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, spreading God’s love and peace.
